  • Issue with using LP64_Multiband_64 Sonar plugin

I have projects now running smoothly in Sonar X2 64 bit.
When I insert the "LP64_Multiband_64" plugin on any track or bus, I get huge distortion / degradation of sound quality.
Yet, If I bypass the plugin, the distortion / degradation goes away.
I've tried turning levels down, but the degradation persists, even at lower levels, making this plugin totally unusable for me.

Since this is a Sonar plugin, and I haven't heard any other troubles with this on the forum, I must conclude something in my
set-up / soundcard must be causing this issue. I'm using the ASIO soundcard drivers.

Anybody else seen this happening, or know what might be going on ?

Hi there.

I assume that the parameters aren't set to extreme settings such as low threshold & high ratio thus actually causing the distortion?

Only other thing that springs to mind is that your latency buffer settings are low and a power hungry plug-in like the LP64 is overloading your system.

What happens if you raise mixing latency a bit and then try?

Yes Karl . . . If I crank my latency setting from about 6 msec up to 48 msec, the "LP64_Multiband_64" plugin becomes somewhat useable, is this plugin really that CPU intensive, or is my older soundcard the culprit ?

It might be your soundcard/drivers. I used a Delta 44 for a while some time ago and I never got it working that well.

You should really be able to run LP64 okay at a low latency but of course system power makes a difference although you seem to have plenty. The fact that it works at higher latency tends to suggest that the problem lies with your latency settings and ultimately the soundcard.

Maybe another delta user will jump in with some suggestions or perhaps has experienced different results.

Thanks for the input Karl,
I knew when I did my recent system upgrade that I may have to get a newer soundcard, but plugging in the LP64 has really been the first issue I've had with this new system, all other plugs seem to work alright.
I've been looking at the Roland Quad Capture, just need to see if it fits with my mixer / speaker set-up etc. . .

You might try changing to asio mode if you are not already using it. I used to use a delta 66 till little over a year ago. As I recall I set the asio buffers size to 128 or 256. I used it with sonar 8.53 and the lp64 worked ok. Of course the LP64 has been updated since then. Hope you get it sorted.

That plugin has an unavoidably high internal latency and is intended for mastering purposes. It's standard practice to increase your buffers for mastering. Set your soundcard's buffers to a high value (e.g. 1024) when you're done tracking.

This is a good tip bitflipper, I had hoped when I found the right settings on my new system, I wouldn't have to be adjusting
any buffer settings, just leave it alone, but you're suggesting when going from tracking to mastering, an adjustment may be required.

I'm wondering what it is about the LP64 plugin that makes it so intense, I can run my Ozone 5 plugin on the same project
with no problems ?

Anyways, thanks for all the insights.

I have had all kinds of experiences related to drivers. It's the first thing I check for strangeness. Last night, I bounced a mix and it actually skipped around. No idea how that happened. I have two interfaces, and I switch between them when I'm not sure. Maybe restart the PC. I used to use MME for mixing b/c it was easy and native and I didn't need an interface, but many of the pro channel plugs would go goofy. I had some posts long ago about compressors pumping like crazy. When I plugged in my interface and switched to Asio (something I used to do for recording but not always for mixing) the problems disappeared.

Although Ozone has a multiband compressor, by default it's not linear-phase like the LP64. Enable digital (linear-phase) crossovers, select digital (linear phase) for the equalizer model and increase the buffer size to 4096, and Ozone will stress your CPU as much as the LP64.
