When you delete a soft synth, any tracks that had previously been routed to it must be re-routed somewhere else. That "somewhere else" will generally be the next destination on the list and might be wildly inappropriate, such as an external hardware controller.

Whenever you want to substitute a different soft synth for an existing track, it's best to insert the new synth first and re-route the tracks before deleting the old synth. If the MIDI tracks are being retired rather than reassigned, and won't be used or won't be needed for a while, archive them. Archived tracks, whether MIDI or audio, are completely ignored and therefore cannot cause any problems.

It's actually easier than that now. Just highlight the synth in the synth rack, click the synth tab drop down, and select 'replace synth'

Dave, in X2 there is also the option to "Remove Associated Tracks" when deleting a synth from the Rack.

I don't know if it was there in X1.

Actually I did have "Remove Associated Tracks" checked.  That's where the bug hatched from.  In the CV...you could still see remnants of the track, or where it used to be....but the fader and some other stuff was showing up at the TOP of the CV...not down at the bottom where it normally is.

I did copy and paste each and every track one at a time...once I was able to open the bad project us "shift" open.

Funny thing was, every time I would click on that "ghost" track either in PRV, CV or TV...it would lock up Sonar.  Didn't matter if it was right or left click.

OK....I finally found what was causing the problem with X2 locking up.

I had a Superior Drummer Latin Percussion synth in my project template.

When I would "Delete" the Superior Drummer synth with "Remove Associated Tracks" checked...it would remove the synth but NOT the tracks.  If you clicked on the track X2 would lock up EVERY TIME.

So...I opened up my template...deleted the associated tracks from the latin percussion synth FIRST...then deleted the synth and it's working OK now.

Can't figure out why it was doing this.  I've deleted synths all the time and never had a problem like this.  I guess something just got crossed up with this one project template I made and created this crash every time.

Thanks for the help and suggestions everyone....you ARE appreciated...!
