To me, the "mystery of love" is that I've ever had any? It would be nice to have some again? But I'm not betting on it... They say it is better to have loved and lost? I say it is better to hang on to your shiz.... Instead of giving half of it away.

Dan,
Really good piece.   I missed the "treble mix" having just returned from a short vacation but this version you have posted sounds really good.    You are right, the SSL-G is a little more aggressive, I would use the SSL-E for this type of music, along with the SSL Bus Compressor.   I have tried the Waves Aphex a few times but to me it always sounds a bit tinny unless used on a bus with very little original signal going through it.  I actually prefer Wave's Vitamin to the Aphex, Vitamin also gives you some nice additional parameters to tweak with such as Center/Mid controls.

Anyway, the song is really good, arrangement is interesting throughout, and the mix is quite superb.

Regards

To be fair, the Aphex wasn't the problem at all. It was the SSL G Channel. Once I started using that, I was matching the EQ on other tracks to match and the whole thing got out of whack. Sounded fine to me until I stepped away from it, lol.

I, too, find that the Aphex works wonders on a bus rather than as an insert. I use it like I would a reverb send and send anything that needs some air to that bus. Much more controllable that way, and the effect is much smoother as well. I'll have to look at Vitamin at some point, but it'll be when Waves has one of those crazy 80% off deals for single plugins. Since it is so new, I expect that will be awhile.

Regards,
Dan

Wow, great work Dan. I was engaged from start to finish, and had a huge smile on my face at the end.

If this is the remix then I think there could still be a bit more depth to the piano, the other elements are so rich that the piano needs more depth to really be the hero. The more I listen, the less it is an issue for me, so I think those listeners that come to the song for the first time are going to notice this more.

Just to reiterate, this is just a brilliant song and I am in no way canning what you have accomplished. This is my third listen and it gets better every time. That is the sign of a good song for me.

My wife agrees, no drums. (What is it with wives and drums?).

Thanks for the kind words Wayne! And yes, this is the remix. All the old mixes were nuked off the Internet, lol.

While I would like to hear what you are suggesting, I don't know how to accomplish what you mean. I've learned how to make drums, bass and guitars big, but I'm fairly sure those techniques wouldn't apply for this piano. Any suggestions on how to get there besides simply turning it up?

Dan

maybe doubling the piano with a different sounding piano? But very very low in the mix. Just an idea.

Dan, this is a really nice piece of music, written with real consideration. I would only echo what others have said re the piano. I personally would have used a more rounded and intimate tone.
Good job though, look forward to hearing more of your orchestral work!

All the best

I tried experimenting with that, but the additional piano added a bunch of other stuff I didn't like, like slightly different dynamics, some phase issues, and a little flanging in spots. I could never get the two to sit together all the way through.
