Why does it happen that the freeze button in the synth rack in the browser is greyed out - in particular with multi timbral synths like Kontakt, Play etc - but when I right click on it and choose Freeze Synth it still works like nothing was ever greyed out?
 
I have also seen this on all the freeze buttons, only to revert to start and see them all come back to er... active state(?). This doesn't really make any sense. Or should it? '

Sounds like a(nother) minor graphics bug.

I've seen this in 8.5 as well. Like you said, it's a minor annoyance; as long as the track freeze button works it's not a showstopper. 

Really? X2 is the first time I have ever experienced this. and on my old DAW with 8,5 I did freeze tracks quite a lot.

But it doesn't matter. I thought it perhaps was a certain function or something
