Yes, there are work arounds for this problem, but
this system is not friendly! :)  I would like to know
why it has not been done, every version we have one of
these discussions, if it requires a complete rewrite of Sonar
I could understand that but it sure looks like an easy
thing to fix.

"...I hope they leave the present method as an option so I don't have to type left and right in front of my inputs. I've got 24 of them so that will be a considerable pain for me..."

"...That doesn't help at all Mike because AFAIK I can't do them all at once, I still have to change them one at a time. I suppose it could be argued that pressing Ctrl + V twenty four times is easier than typing left and right twelve times each though. Fortunately under the present system I don't have to do either. That's why I hope it's retained as an option if it does change..."

Maybe I'm confused... do you have 24 mono channels on your ZED or is it 12 stereo channels?

I would think a lot of folks would call the channels ZED labels as 1 through 16, well something like 1 through 16, and then the extra 4 stereo channels are often times called 17-18, 19-20, 21-22, 23-24... just like it says on the ZED.

I think you'd get used to SONAR's friendly names making sense... if they ever get fixed so that they make sense.

As I have said... I'll pay for that when it happens.

mike

My understanding is some of the problems are caused by the way the ASIO drivers were written.

I use a EMU 1820m. It has 2 mic inputs and 6 line inputs. And 8 ADAT inputs.

Each input is routed via the Patchmix interface. All strips are stereo. Input can be mono or stereo.

Patchmix sends each strip as stereo:     sending to "ASIO In 31/32 Host"

Sonar preferences sees this input as  "E-MU ASIO ASIO In 31"

The Track input dialog lists this input as:
Left E-MU ASIO ASIO In 31
Right E-MU ASIO ASIO In 31
Stereo E-MU ASIO ASIO In 31

Renaming them does not reduce the 3 options.

Given the number of items, I have been using stereo inputs strips in the patchmix to minimize the number of items listed.

So is this a SONAR issue or how the ASIO driver is written? Or both?

Yes, the Windows drivers are dealing with pairs.

Yes, most of the other DAWS let you use what ever names you want and the correlation takes place behind the scenes... a task a computer excels at.

Hi Mike. Sorry it's probably me that's confusing you. It has 16 mono and an additional 8 ADAT piped in.

It's the way I have it set up that makes it easier for me to think in terms of left/right. Most of my hardware is permanently plugged in and most of it is stereo using the mono pairs panned hard left and right accordingly. Hence it's far easier for me to think in terms of left right rather than channel numbers. I use a patch bay for patching in mono stuff.

You seem to think I don't want or like your idea of completely free names. I think it's a great idea, I thought I'd already said that. All I'm saying is I'd also like the option to have the left right suffix automatically added, believe it or not I personally find it useful.

I'd also like the inputs split into mono/stereo sub menus.

May I suggest that you post up some pre-written wording for a feature request and then start a fresh thread (or re-title this one) encouraging others to FR it. It might actually happen then.

There was a similar thread a while back about being able to insert VSTs in the PC. Somebody (might even have been me, I can't remember) started a pre-written FR thread and encouraged others to submit it. Hey presto, X2 has that ability. Coincidence? Maybe, but what have you got to lose?

While making suggestions on here is always good the only way to be sure it reaches the right ears is the feature request page.
