• SONAR
  • I sure hope they release an update for X2 soon. (p.2)

X2 is running very good here.

I think, if you had issues and crashes with Pro Tools and then also with Sonar, most likely your system has a problem.

cheers

I'm not so sure about that.  Give me a perfect system and any sequencer out there and I will find a way to make it crash.

You can look at the bug fix lists and forums for any of them and find lots of bugs and recipes to make them crash.  It's the nature of complex software.  (Not to say that some aren't better than others.)

There's no reason to assume that because it doesn't crash on your system with your workflow that someone else will not see crashes.   There are a huge number of permutations of perfectly good hardware and plugs, and a software vendor can't possibly test all of them.

I'll bet when the X2 update comes out the release notes will have lots of lines like "Fixed issue that could cause system crash when xxxxxx "  Maybe he's doing xxxxxx as part of his workflow and you aren't.

John

Do you have CWBRN numbers for the crashes you sent?

No sorry, I pretty much just let Sonar send them. I'll be more vigilant about saving the numbers in future!

The issues I had with Pro Tools were mainly due to the memory limitations of working in 32 bit, while using a lot of plugins and virtual instruments. I ended up ReWire-ing it to Reaper and hosting the instruments on that. But that was a pain to be honest, and brought with it other problems.

I can honestly say that it did some good improvements for me. One thing is that R-Mix suddenly run correctly. Prior to Visual Studio 2012 update the GUI of R-Mix only was a totally white box (even though I heard the audio processing correctly). Also seem more stable. I would highly recommend it!

Does installing Visual Studio really help??  I have Visual Studio installed on my work machines but I don't really want to intall it on my DAW unless there's a really good reason.

Thanks,

John

Which Visual Studio are you running? There's a plethora of versions on the MS site?
I know nothing about VS or why I should need it but if it helps I'll try it.

Why would you waster time doing that?

I'd rather make music.

I think he meant that in a self-deprecating way.

Exactly.  I have a special talent for finding just the right things to do to make sequencers crash immediately after I've forgotten to save for a while.  And at that point the auto-save file is always corrupted.

So I installed the 2012 C++ redistributional (I presume that's what was meant, since Visual Studio itself is the development tool), and it hasn't seemed to make much difference. I'm still getting hangs. R-Mix has always worked good for me, so whatever issues were causing yours to freak out before the quickfix I guess I don't have.

In terms of plugins, I would say that 98% of what I use are either the ProChannel modules or 64-bit Native Instruments plugs, although I do have the odd 32-bit plug (maybe bitbridge is the problem).  What I'm finding though is that a lot of my hangs happen when the audio isn't even playing - it's when I'm clicking around the clips pane, especially when working with automation.

It may be worthwhile rolling your graphics card drivers forward/backward just to see.
