hi to everyone
please can you advise me on the following issues,

1. is it better to record my vocals dry with no effects and edit them till ready.
2. i would like to make the vocals sound like the early rock n roll stars such as cochran,vincent,holly etc i only want to use the plug ins in sonar 8.5 to gain this sound.
3. which effects would you recommend to use just on the vocals.

1. Yes, without a shadow of a doubt
2. Use the Sonitus plugs
3. Use the Sonitus plugs - EQ, Compressor, Reverb

Aiming for a certain sound means picking the right microphone, too.
Search for  info on suitable ones  for your task, and stay away from USB-mics.
Maybe the more knowledgeable forum members have ideas.

If your trying to get that old school classic rock and R&B sound on the vox, try either a little saturation (not total distortion, just a touch). It may not be a bad idea also if you have a tape sim plug to treat the vocal with that as well. There use to be a free Izotope plugin called Vinyl that was very cool when you put a vocal thru it. Have fun.

please can you advise or point me into the right direction for a tutorial on how to add the Izotope plugin in to sonar as i have never done this before.
 i sure its easy once you know what to do. and now for a really dumb question?

• in sonar 8.5 it has s/drummer3 i have watched the tutorial on youtube and got sd3 to open into a project not to use but to play with. i got as far as selecting a drum kit and went to get it to sample  pressed play but i have no sound and the kit wont play at all!!!!!!!!!! now for the really dumb part does sd3 need to have a midi connection if so will i be able to use my sd2 sound module for this.

would anybody know if there is a plugin which is either a watkins copycat or something like it.
also where do you get free plugin for sonar is there some recomended sites to go to.
i know the post was vox but is there a double bass plugin i could use for my midi tracks or would i need to buy a module which has double bass as a preset within the module.

kvraudio is a good place to start for free stuff but your time may be better spent learning the FXs you have.

SD3 can play MIDI patterns you program in the PRV or step sequencer. No other MIDI device required.

To use Session drummer you have to load a kit first. 
The skins will be blurred until you do. You can test it with the mouse. 
Then you can either load patterns or just play it from a midi track or with your controller which is how I use it.. takes to long to find the right pattern so I make my own.   

I think a big part of the old school sound was tube compression and of course they had special echo chambers built into the studio. Try a plate reverb. 
I like to add compression using hardware so I can hear my voice interacting with it as I record. I tend to watch the meter on the compressor to see when it's kicking in and stay on the edge. If you don't own a hardware compressor then record dry for sure and add it later. 

It's been a while since I used Session Drummer at all. I believe you still have to set a midi track up and point the output of the midi track to the audio track with SD in it to even get sound out of it. Like I said, I'm not sure. Now, for the use of Vinyl there used to be a manual for it on the Izotope site. Just to get you up and running, it works just like any other VST. Put it in the FX bin on the vox track if you want to treat just the vox. Sometimes for effect I would throw into a buss, point the buss to the master out, and put all the tracks thru it so the whole mix would sound like a vinyl record. Use it sparingly in this case. I don't think you'll have any problem figuring out how to use the settings.

BTW, make sure you turn on the input monitoring button on the track if you don't hear audio out of session drummer. Also, I agree with a hardware compressor on your mic before you hit your interface. Set it just to catch the peaks and leave it alone. 

A slapback tape delay was crucial to that Holly/Vincent/Cochran sound, and I can't imagine trying to achieve the effect without hearing it in my headphones as I sing. But you don't want to actually record the echo; you want the vocal to go in dry and add the effects later.

The solution: go pick up a cheap effects unit on eBay or Craigslist for fifty bucks and let your singer hear that while singing, but record the vocal dry.
