Maybe I used the wrong term. It would be referred to as sympathetic vibrations. It is the same process that makes pianos so resonant when you press down the damper pedal. When you push the pedal down it raises the dampers off of all the strings in the piano so instead of just the strings for one key vibrating you get all the strings that are resonating harmonics because all the strings in the piano are generating movement. No matter what gauge string you use there will always be that little bit of string resonating on the headstock. Not all guitars produce it as loud. Some are worse. We're talking about the parts of the strings passing over the nut to the tuning pegs.

BTW, I am glad to have been of service. All the guys on here have been so helpful to me. It's nice to be able to return the favor every once and a while.

Or just tie a bit of cloth round the head, tailpiece etc., like Sidroe suggested..

Oh, but you can! Cakewalk just released the brand new Cloth-Tie Pro Channel module just for this purpose. Just $99.95 at the Cakewalk Store. You can select Cotton, Wool, Silk, Nylon and Satin presets.

There's also the Deluxe version with 40 shades of grey gag preset.

Many thanks to all of you for your suggestions. When playing recording lead on my old Martin I now mute the lower strings when playing the top 3 strings and all sounds great. Having the cloth tie helps lessen the lower strings sympathetic vibrations. Also, I had some success working the Pro-Channel EQ--finding unwanted frequencies and cutting them. All in all, this is a pretty good workaround. Thanks again! Mike

Great catch, Sidroe. As for tracks already recorded, rog857, I see you're using X2 which includes RMix.  I've successfully used RMix to easily remove unwanted sound from a wav file. You might try playing around with it.

Best,
Rob

I usually wrap rubber bands around my headstocks just for this

I recorded directly into a DAKING Mic-Pre One. The sound I'm hearing sounds like reverb but I have no FX on the track. Weird. Must be some gremlin in the system. Guess I'll have to redo the track. Thanks for your thoughts on the matter. Mike

It's room noise, reflections, being picked up by the guitar strings. It is harmonics but  what's exciting the strings to that level is reflections.
