With one singer I've had to work with recently, I've taken to putting the mics away BEFORE the session.

 God, that's funny!

I love this forum. I recently bought an SM57 and was thinking about everything mentioned here every time I looked at it sitting in it's stand.  Unfortunately, I'm anal AND lazy at the same time. I feel bad that it's sitting out, but can't bring myself to do anything about it... wait a minute...

OK, I just put it in it's fine leather case.

I feel better.

But did you put it in the fine leather case the right way round?  Are you sure?  Do you think you should go and check?

I never use more than 2 mics in a given session and it only takes a minute or so to put them both back in their cases.  I also keep my mic/guitar cables rolled up and stored away in a plastic bin when not in use, and every hardware item (e.g., synths, Maschine, controllers) has a dedicated and custom-fitted dust cover.  But, then again, I'm sorta a neat-freak.

Good to see you here again.

+1 Crown Royal is the drink of choice around my place, just so happens they come with those handy mic covers.

I never thought I'd get so many opinions. I can say I never have retired a mic so it probably doesn't matter much. While I spend a certain amount of time setting up and breaking down, I don't much mind throwing it in the car since I'm always packed and ready.

I'm fortunate to have a dedicated room for my studio, and I leave my mics up all the time.   I put a zip lock baggy over my mics to keep the dust away.

+1. Same here.

People who cover mikes with plastic bags must have had an aunt or granny who's furniture looked like that.
