I've been to quite a number of pricey recording studios, never have I seen any gold plating on any cables, my best friend has a large studio, SSL console, wall to wall outboard gear, 100K worth of mic's, control room and speaker system built by Brüel & Kjær etc.. uses standard nickel neutrik's all around.

A fool and his money..

Not on the cables but on the jacks. You know the thing you connect to on the hardware. Cables are replaceable where the jacks may not be.

I know, neutrik is a company that makes Jacks and XLR's plugs used by most professional studios, sorry should have been more clear on that, I just assumed most people knew the neutrik brand, perhaps they are more common in DK.

Neutrik is pretty common in the US too.

Snake Oil for the masses.

It makes them feel better about themselves and gives them faux bragging rights in front of impressionable (but not knowledgable) friends

Gold plating is not hype. Gold is good because its immutable meaning it wont degrade over time. But its only important for jacks not the wire. If your jacks are not gold plated than you will need to clean them from time to time. Almost all metals will corrode but gold wont. You should clean them anyway.

The price is not much more for jacks that have a gold coating.

As for cords that claim a better transfer due to some design is bogus. But you do want well made cables and cords because you want the connections to be well made. Other than that one cable is the same as another.

the other thing that is misunderstood is the magnetic field ....and so the impact of a cheap cable near a magnetic source !! i took the Monster for the conector and blindage (french word , i don't know how to say it in english) ....the way you layout the cables have an impact too !! it's obvious when i did my car booming system (Focal based) but it's the case in studios and even in desktops !! (when i open a desktop , i know if it was assembled by a pro or a regular dude)  ...we need to let the power pass a way and the data cable in another place , far from power !! ...it was even obvious with paralllel buses ....because even tortion had an impact on the data sync !!

My cable was 30 euros  , it rely my fireface 400 (the nerve center of my on the go rig) to my laptop , so it's worth every euros !!

Kinda like all that gold plating on your audio connectors hipe. Sure they're better, but unless the wires between them are gold too...

I will assume you are not an electrical engineer, as this shows a significant lack of technical understanding. the weakest link in any electrical circuit involving cables is the mechanical connection. two mating surfaces of gold plate has a significantly lower, and more predictable contact resistance than two nickel plated connectors...
