I tried to work the ProChannel modules via a control surfaces using the Mackie Control option, but I can only seem to access the top most module inserted into the ProChannel. Jumping to 2nd, 3rd and so on does not give me anything to control ... am i being stupid or is it the late hour ... fiddling with parameters in the plug-ins seems to work like it used ...

No it's a known issue. Put in a feature request/ bug report hopefully if they get enough of them it might get fixed.

Thread here although as you've discovered the only module available now is the first one in the chain, prior to X1D (IIRC) it was EQ or nothing, which I actually preferred to how it is now.

yes, lets all put in another feature request.  i would be one happy camper if the PC worked with the C4!

It seems like the ProChannel is currently a ProMouseChannel as it doesn't work with the VS-700C, either.
