  • Windows 8 legacy drivers for Firewire? Pops/cracks are back...

Perhaps in the wrong forum, but not sure where to place this thread... Sorry if misplaced.

As I understand it, Microsoft and Apple are leaving the FW technology. Thus it may not seem as a surprise that Windows 8 don't have the option to use the 1394 OHCI (Legacy) drivers which were included in Windows 7.
However, this tend to be a problem for us running audio cards with FW interfaces. Under windows 7 I had to run my Motu Ultralite MK3 with the Legacy drivers to get rid of the cracks/pops. When now installing Windows 8 (x64) the problem have returned.

I found this link with some potential help with this, but haven't tried it yet.

Have others come acrosss this problems under Windows 8 (64 bit), Sonar X1 Producer and Motu (or other) FW card)?

Thanks!

You can see the end of FW happing really soon.

I would sell the Motu (non Hybrid) and buy the Motu Hybid, that lets you use USB and Firewire.

Sorry, i dont have a solution

On the m-audio site, they suggest that you copy the Windows 7 legacy drivers to a safe place before upgrading to Windows 8. Then if you have issues, you can use the Windows 7 legacy drivers. There is an extra step required to get them to install in Windows 8 but it is supposedly doable.

With the latest Focusrite drivers they recommend you switch away from the legacy drivers (previously recommended) and back to the default (Windows 7). I'm wondering if m-audio may have changed their stance with their latest drivers too.

Well, I have the Motu Hybrid card, so guess I should try the USB instead. Might work good anyway, I have a pretty decent DAW in terms of CPU and Dram power.

Hmm, got a bit confused here...
http://blog.cakewalk.com/windows-8-a-benchmark-for-music-production-applications/

The test states that running in Desktop mode under windows 8 shouldn't change anything from windows 7

"...There are no changes to how drivers work as far as desktop applications go, so its very likely that your Windows 7 drivers will work on Windows 8 without modification..."

PS - I run a PCI Express card with Texan Instrument chipset for my Firewire. Even though I run Windows 8 (64) shouldn't this work any way?

FWIW I have a regular PCI 3 port firewire card (with TI chipset) and it is working in Windows 8 (64). I did not install any special drivers. One was installed during the Windows 8 upgrade.

It all depends. It could work or it could not work. Each situation is different and the smallest variable can make or break it.
There are no guarantees of it working good

Eric: for starters lest install chipset/inf drivers for your motherboard thats running win8.. goto motherboard home page / support / drivers / chipset/inf win8. You can see the end of FW happing really soon , this is total BS!
