I think one problem with the internet is that it has spawned an obsession with how things are "supposed" to be done and the associated terminology that goes with it. Kids have always been the same in that they are keen to pick up the words and phrases which are going to make them sound like they're part of an "enlightened" set which knows what they're doing, but it's magnified tenfold with online culture. I dabbled with electronic music in the early 90's (as I do today) and knew a lot of other people who did, and if anyone had come out and said something like the quote in the OP we would have laughed and asked what in the hell they were on.
I guess it's not just EDM, I hear the same thing in young guitarists who obsess over scales and other associated guitar terminology. You get to an age where you realize none of that really matters.
