Good day all,
Don't know if  this will help. I had a 'incident' of sluggishness a few days ago. I normally disable the Internet via device manager so win is unable to automatic update. There was a small one last tuesday. I closed down everything and went to system to update win 10. Took awhile, I  think that I  may have missed other updates also. When finished, Sonar loaded with no problems, and is working good. I feel Cake is working close with Microsoft to keep product good. Could just be me, but system back to normal. Every update from win closes my mouse/keyboard and I have to re-input devices. Haven't  lost my M-audio 1010lt drivers yet,.....but I'm  waiting.

Update on my situation...a few days ago, I reported that downloading the latest version of SONAR solved a similar problem, but last night I had a spate of dropouts that made working with SONAR unuseable. I noticed there was a lot of background hard drive activity. I turned off the network adapter to disable the internet, and everything was back to normal. I can't help but wonder if this relates to Windows updates.

I've been following this thread & a couple other regarding similar issues due to Sonar Platinum doing some strange things for me, as well. After getting the 2017.08 update I have been getting these annoying, loud buzzes when I hit the "play" button. The "audio dropout" alert pops ups, nothing plays, but I get a very loud buzz until I hit the "play" button again. The buzz sounds almost like a very aggressive sawtooth synth sound at a low F#, but it is definitely not that.

This may happen once during a day-long session of recording, editing & mixing, or it may happen 10 times during a half-hour of just reviewing an earlier session. Completely random. It will happen on a project with 3 recorded tracks & one reverb plugin, or not, then on a project with a ton of tracks, synths, plugins, etc - or not.

Earlier this year I bought a Creation Station from Sweetwater, and it is used only for Sonar. They did a great job of pre-configuring Windows 10, and I religiously disable internet, virus scans, etc, when I record, edit & mix. I will enable the internet when I need to update Sonar or download new drivers for the Focusrite Scarlet, etc, but the only thing I have updated lately is Sonar. Prior to the 2017.08 update this issue never happened, even once. I'm wondering if Windows sneaked an update in during a Sonar update, and if combined with something in the 2017.08 update this problem manifested.

I'll probably do the 2017.09 update today, maybe that will help. If not, I'll revisit the suggestions in this thread & see if any of them help. Thanks, everybody, for all the good info you all share!

have you tried disabling the onboard audio ("high definition audio device" in your screenshot) in the BIOS? windows won't even know it's there then, and so won't load any drivers for it

This is the first thing I did this morning (well, after my normal morning routines that are quite irrelevant to this situation )  and after disabling the onboard audio in the bios, some of the drivers do reappear in the audio playback tab, but they are all listed as "disconnected".  I then proceeded to do several stress tests in Sonar, which included playing and recording with Ozone 8 inserted in the master bus, and rendering large projects in the regular (not fast) mode. So far not a single click, pop, audio engine stop, or crash.  Projects were set at 24 bit/48,000 with ASIO buffer set at 512 (no latency when recording)
Keeping my fingers crossed, I'm hopeful that this fixed the problem once and for all.

Thanks again for all the advice, I'll keep you updated if there are any further issues.

For those of you following this thread because of similar issues, I've also found other Windows settings that will help reduce unnecessary memory and CPU usage.

First is the Task Manager.  Using the Processes, Startup, and Services tabs you can find out and disable unnecessary processes.

And the second location is the Computer Management window. (see image below).  I discovered a dozen or so services that are running that don't need to be.  You can right click on each service and tell it when to start (automatic, automatic delayed, manual, etc).  You can also shut down a running process after you change it to "manual".  So it will only start when you use the app that requires that service.  For example there were a few Adobe services running that I absolutely don't need, unless I'm running Photoshop.  And even then some of these services still don't need to be running.

Microsoft typically release updates on the 2nd Tuesday of every month, so that makes sense.
(aka. `Patch Tuesday')

I had the same thing happen to a lesser degree after the Windows update of a couple days ago. I installed the latest Sonar version, and all was well. I hope the fix is equally simple for you!

I did the Windows update Sunday then the Splat update...I haven't really worked on any rec projects....so I hope things are steady. I've been leery of the last few Windows updates, not doing the Creator but the update done on Sunday included it.
I've open, closed Splat only.....
Splat has been rock steady for me on Windows 10 laptop since I put it on laptop / use focusrite USB 18i20 2nd gen / no more desktop Sonar.

I put it on laptop when I upgraded to Focusrite AI, and things have been great. Been real happy.

Now Anderton has me worried...😑.
I have a church meeting tonight, no real time to test until tomorrow...we'll see. I'm normally an optimist..

I'm following this thread too as I've been having crashes randomly all of a sudden,, Never had them before or if I did it was rare. Now it's once a day if I do longer sessions,, Short sessions no problem..

What seems to work for me is defiantly disable the network adaptor.
Because I keep my DAW offline I've not had the problem of drivers being re installed yet, but when ever I do enable the network and update Sonar, afterwards this is when I have issues.W10 undoes all my optimizing and re sets defaults I did'nt want. So I won't blame the Sonar updates as this cannot be the problem otherwise the forum would be crazy with posts.

My feelings are that W10 has been a bad deal overall for a DAW friendly OS. I never, never have issues with my W7 laptop,,, and I actually often forget to turn off the Wi Fi.
I also had no problems back when I first built the computer and bought W 8.1.

It's W 10 mindless quest to control what it thinks is important.

I still have my W 8.1 disk and I'm am hugely tempted!

If Cakewalk want to make a smooth ride for us, They should keep a sticky at the top with a running list of problems we can expect after a windows update. And a updated list of optimizing chores would be handy too. The internet is flooded with bad ideas and it would be nice to have list of optimizations that are right up to date and actually important.
