Good point...problem is that Windows is a real **** to deal with...its like everyone's system has some elements unique to it's own environment and setup. Often times it's rogue drivers and superfluous hardware items that complicate the problem further still. I would hope however that Sonar personnel, who are in the know and understand their own software better than anyone else, are proactively implicating themselves to speedily find a rememdy. It is extremely frustrating and is presenting loss of time and opportunity for several users...me included! It's been a real test of patience after each dropout.

My Windows 7 install is from 2009. It's never been updated. Sonar Pro is rock solid for me. I haven't had a crash or more than a minor hiccup in 7 months. I haven't done the 2017-10 update yet - hopefully this weekend.

Here's something to try....

DAMN! After another FRUSTRATING day of trying to troubleshoot, I accidentally stumbled on something!!
Not sure what to make of it..although I feel somehow that there is a hint of the problem we are discussing here:
 
I only use Sonar...today however, I opened Protools First (free version of Protools).
I had the latency checker on. I noticed that upon opening a simple wav file imported from Sonar that the latency meters shot WAY down!! Almost to half!!.
 
I then loaded Sonar and without even opening a song file, the latency meters shot up again!!
I took screen shots of the two scenarios showing the meters... but (embarrassingly) I don't now how to load them here.

At this point I am wondering if a clean re install of Sonar Platinum(which is a pain) is worth it??

As far as posting pictures in this forum (something I had wondered about for a long time) you have to upload your pictures to a website that lets you post your pictures (I use Imgur, it's free), then once you have your pictures loaded to that site, you click on one of the link buttons (BB Code) for that particular picture, copy the URL code, and paste it into a message here.  And thus:

A clean install is not that bad.

I am pretty certain at this point that Sonar is the problem. I ruled out my motu 16a sound card, I also ruled out my computer as a problem. It is either a driver, sonar and more precisely, the way it is loading and/or using drivers , or perhaps the way windows is allocating resources.

FWIW I am using the latest version of Platinum on the latest version of Windows 10 Pro 1709 on an ancient Quad Core System and it's running like a top. No lagging, no pops/crackles etc. 
What sometimes gets overlooked is the influence of drivers that windows keeps enabling/updating - in my case, most notably my NVidia Card's HD Audio (HDMI) drivers which need to be disabled with each major Windows update.
