I just loaded my normal.cwt, it was there.
I just created a new project using my normal template and it was there.
Maybe some of your file paths are pointing to the wrong directories.

Yeah, I was thinking the same, so I created a test template with my new layout. When I open a new file based on this template, I get the correct behaviour.

Then I renamed the test.cwt to Normal.cwt, both these were in the same folder, so I think Sonar's looking in the right place, and strangely, I get the old behaviour, i.e. it doesn't default to my layout.

This is bugging me rather than causing a problem. Perhaps I should just get used to picking my layout every time I start a new project.

Do a search for .pgl files and make sure you have "show hidden files/folders" selected.  You will find the pgl in something like C:USERS/APPS/etc/etc/....

If you add your saved setup in that folder and then select it in plugin manager, that should do it.

I have it also saved on a backup hdd but for some reason it keeps reverting back to the folder mentioned above.  But yes save blank project template with your plugin layout and always start from there I suspect.

is X2 using the same X1 tempalte folder ......if not be sure to point the one you want to use

or try to look for and import a plugin layout and resave it in X2 or last try ....open the plugin manager without sonar (the app only ) ...and try resaveing them to the X2 folder

just quik thoughts as i don't have X2 installed yet ...lol

same thing here. never get a default instruments template to work right. my guess is it gets rebuilt when sonar opens and vst scans.

I had this problem early on and i got it corrected but I don't know if this is what I did but, Insert a track with your normal template unless you have some already, I like to have a mic track ready to record soon as I turn sonar on, but I believe this is how I solved that problem, check it out and report back and I'll keep looking if that didn't fix it.

Don't forget one thing - it's ok to save a Plugin menu layout with your own settings, but until you open up your normal (or any other) template and tell Sonar to use your layout, and then SAVE your template, Sonar will use the default layout.

It won't do it automatically for you

Thanks to everyone for their advice.

moffdnb: found that folder, it already has my layout .pgl file in it. Like I said, I can manually apply the layout. Do you mean I should save another file here?

Zo: I have separate template folders for X1 and X2. When I save a new template in X2, it's definitely going into the X2 folder. Tried running the plug-in manager outside Sonar, didn't make a different

Swamptooth: funny thing is that it works for my FX layout, but not for the instruments one.

frakjcc: my template already has a track.

Bristol_Jonesy: good point - done it though. When I open the template by double clicking it, the new layout is selected

I think I'll try starting from another template - perhaps there's something wrong with my normal.cwt. I'll post if this makes a difference. As moffdnb and scook  have got it working properly, it looks like it's a problem on my system

Have you tried to delete the default template?

I've just created a plugin menu layout for my synths, and apart from a long forgotten problem that I've not seen since 8.5.3** it works as expected.

** in 8.5.3 very often, the layout would lose its ability to index the synths properly and as a result, you could never be sure if the one you selected would be the one to open up. It was nearly always a synth 2 "slot" above in the menu layout hierarchy that would open. Usually, saving, closing 7 reopening Sonar would cure it.

I had this happen the first time I used the menu just now, and the same remedy apples. This is extremely annoying if you're building up a Midi composition.
