  • Can someone explain how to work the PC2A Leveler to me?

Done some googling and read the Cakewalk entries on it but I'm still a little confused as to what exactly some of the dials do. Specifically the Meter Select and to a lesser extent the R37. Kind of curious about the Compressor vs. Limiter option as well but I think I can research that as more of a general thing.

Peak reduction and gain I understand more or less. Cheers.

And I guess to clarify more I understand that the R37 set to Flat applies the effect to the entire signal but I'm not fully grasping what happens when I turn it closer to the High Frequency end. Is that boosting or cutting highs? It's kind of too subtle to tell for me. The Meter knob... well I have no freaking clue what that is doing.

Sorry if I'm wasting your tim, but have you clicked on an instance of the PC2A and hit F1?

This opens up a help file that explains a lot about the controls etc.

From the F1 Help File:-

R37 (High Frequency Pre-emphasis trim). Adjusts the gain reduction frequency response. The original hardware unit was designed for leveling in radio and TV broadcast applications. Due to an increase in high frequency content in FM broadcasting, the R37 control adds gain reduction at frequencies above 1kHz, based on the program material. Use this control to reduce or prevent over-modulation caused by the pre-emphasis (high-frequency sensitivity). When set to the FLAT position, gain reduction is applied equally on all frequencies. When the control is moved toward the HF position, gain reduction is increased on the high frequencies. Experiment to achieve a good balance between low and high frequency limiting. This control is often useful for de-essing vocals (cut down sibilance by compressing high frequencies), but the FLAT setting is recommended for most music applications. To adjust the knob in fine increments, hold down the SHIFT key while moving the knob.

Hope that helps.

If not,  shout back, and I'll try to explain what limited understanding I have of that statement..

Gah. Thanks, jb. For some reason I got it in my head that didn't work with PC modules. Seriously spaced out today. Ooof. Cheers.

Read it, then come back if you've any questions.  I don't know if I'll be able to help, but may be able to point you somewhere that will.

No need for "Gah" and "Ooof" moments.  There is a ridiculous amount to learn and remember.  I wish I'd picked up as much as you have, as quickly as you seem to have done, when I started out..

Did that last sentence make sense?  I'm tired..

@jb... Heh, indeed. Thanks for the kind words and encouragement. However I think I might have the luxury of more time than most to mess around with this stuff. If I had to keep a steady job I'd probably still be trying to figure out how to track.

Anyway, thanks for shaking the bolts loose from my noodle. I guess staring at this stuff so long makes you forget the simplest things... like how to open the bleeping manuals. lol

Cheers.

I feel the R37 set to HF really helps with the esses on vox!

SvenArne, Good suggestion.  I will try it.  I have not had very successful results with the Channel Strip De-esser; by that, I mean that it is not effective for some situations.
