Hey all,

My projects are 24 bit, 48 K.  What export setting would give me the best results for sites like Soundcloud.  I usually do "What You Hear" and have recently gotten better results turning off dithering.  What do you all use?

Thanks!

Dithering should only be applied if reducing bit depth. IIRC mine are bounced down to 44/16 with powr-3 dither applied. It's been a while since I uploaded to soundcloud though.

IMO a normal export should be done to 16 bits/44,1 which is the CD-standard. Otherwise you'll bump into compatibility problems here and there, if your intention is to move the file around.

Does Soundcloud (or any similar service) accept anything else than 16/44,1 or MP3? If so, I wasn't aware of that.

I don't see where they need a certain bit depth on the soundcloud help page for uploading.  I understand dithering in regard to CD preparation, going from 24 to 16 bit.  I'm less clear on how it comes into play for uploading, if at all.  Reason I ask is that the last few times I've uploaded to SoundCloud, there was some distinct noise in the tracks and I'd used the "What you hear" export preset, which does apply dithering.  When I turned that off I didn't notice the noise.

For Dither - Select one of the POW-r's
For Source - Select entire mix or main outs
Export to 16bit and 44.1kHz

FYI- When you go down in bit depth, you need to dither

Thanks guys.  This is definitely helping.  Sounds alot better streaming.  Woohoo!

I'm pretty sure soundcloud, are one of the only ones that accept .wav's [soundclick is MP3 only I think?],but the limit is 16 bit/44.1 KHz,or MP3,and what Iv'e noticed after re-recording a stream,is the .wav upload is 1411 kbs,but the stream they play it back at,is 128 kbs.....bit of a difference, but I v'e compared the original .wav, and the rerecorded 128kbs[MP3 ?]and lined them up in Sonar, and I was surprised,at how little difference there was,in listening only...last time I did it.

Yeah...I'm pretty happy with how my stuff is sounding on there now...much better than before.  I'll be sticking with the 16/44k power r dither.

The reason most sites don't allow .wav and other formats is space constraint...

44.1 Khz /16 bit bit depth allows the highest quality in the smallest footprint...

Higher Res / Bit depth takes more space...

Wave files take A LOT more space...hence the constraint.
