I'm just talking about a single MIDI synth track here...
Currently the other take lanes mute whilst recording in new take lane which seems a sensible default, but I like to be different!
(All takes will playback at the same time unless muted manually).
 
Now I want to listen to (say) the first take lane whilst recording into the second take lane. How can I do this?

just insert a new midi track routed to the same soft synth... take lanes won't do it.  it's actually cool that way if you want to bounce a both tracks to audio at some point. 

Thanks good tip, but let's say then that the track is audio and not MIDI and I'm wondering if there's a setting to change the behaviour here specifically to do with take lanes (see first page).

Did you try setting the recording options to sound on sound ?

There's an option in Preferences along the lines of "mute lanes" or similar, which is on by default.
 

The Mute previous lanes on record is supposed to be only during loop recording. Otherwise the previous lanes should playback unless they are muted. However x2 is having trouble with the muted lanes in midi tracks. They playback sometimes when they are muted. Perhaps they also mute sometimes when they are not muted. Could the same bug.

funny because you initially said midi clip...  ;) so anyway, i did a run through in this this morning recording onto a midi lane and it was playing back my takes while i was recording as well as the initial prv-entered midi data on my midi track.
