Why would you need to have your interface running?  Many times I want to work on projects (on my laptop) without having to connect my StudioLive or Firestudio.  In this case, I'm working with files that were captured with the Zoom H1.

Okay, that just gave me a good clue.  I changed the driver mode from ASIO to WASAPI and can now import audio.

I wish I could answer your question properly, but I'm really a novice. All I can say is that Recomputing the Picture did not work until I turned on my interface.
HOWEVER....
You know how software can be sometimes...for some it just involves deleting the picture files....which didn't work for me.

Anyway... I hope you are up and running again.

Thats happend to me as well. All the times it has occurred it was because the sound card was temporarily unavailiable ( being used / locked by another app ) or, In one instance, I had lost firewire connection to my Echo Audiofire Pre8 and the way just stayed busy untill I happen to look at the rack and realized that the sound card had lost connection. When I re-cycled the sound card, the wave screen redraw was immediate!
YMMV but that did it for me...

You know, thinking back ... I think I remember this issue once before and then it went away.  I'll bet it got better when I turned on the StudioLive.  I'll have to test this the next time I get some free time to mess around in the studio.

I guess it kind of would make sense that the Audio interface would have to be turned on.   If it is not on then the dll for the audio would not be activated which in turn would result in the the Audio software not being activated,  which the wave pic drawing would need as its source of data to compute the picture.
