It's a pity, but as mentioned they are a business and needs to survive.

They in this case is Microsoft.

Struggling to keep afloat with $90,000,000.00 in cash reserves.

Revenue numbers alone are meaningless ... what is their net?

Cash reserve is not a revenue number. It is the actual value of cash they have on hand to spend on any damn thing they want. Your annual income is a revenue number, and is probably what you pay taxes on. Your cash reserve is how much money you have in the bank. http://money.cnn.com/2015/05/11/technology/overseas-cash-tech/
Their revenue is definitely down compared to their salad days, but they are certainly not in a position that they need to cut cloud storage to survive or prosper.

Their reserves are there for a) emergencies b) reinvestment. Who knows what future plans they have for that cash. It's not just about survival, it's about future growth. And profits, of course. Let's not forget about all of those lovely profits.

$90M isn't all that much for such a giant and why should they spend their reserves to provide stuff at a loss?

You are correct. I missed three zeros. Should have written $90,000,000,000.00, as it appeared in the reference link.

And I certainly did not mean to imply that anyone who is in business should be expected provide anything at a loss. My point was that the avarice expected from a business, should not be confused with an economy that is necessary to its survival.

No prob on the zeros.  The amount doesn't change my view.

Do you feel the same about these quantities changing without prices being lowered?

Sugar - 5# to 4# (20%)
Mayo -  32oz to 30oz
Sausage - 16oz to 14oz
.
Ivory soap - 4oz to 3.5oz
.
etc, etc throughout our economy.  But there is no inflation.

I figure if suppliers can arbitrarily reduce the quantity/size/volume of stuff I'm actually paying for, why not reduce the amount of what they give away?

I pay $99 a year for Dropbox Pro. This gives me 1TB of data. I just realized I'm only using about 150GB of this space, so time to put more on there. I use this for work too, so I have my work files at home, on my notebook when travelling, etc. I have a \Studio folder that I have chosen to NOT sync with other machines. This essentially gives me on-line backup for all of the files I put in the folder.

Also, I do pay the extra $38 a year for Extended Version History. Ordinarily, you can get older versions of files going back 30 days. With EVH (lol) you can back up to a year. Haven't had to use this yet, but since I have business stuff on it I consider this a form of business insurance.

I use Crash Plan for cloud backups of music projects etc, on the advice of Noel Borthwick of Cake. It works perfectly and is quite reasonable price-wise too.

I do the same with my DAW, Laptop DAW, Work/Personal computer and The Lovely Lady's computer. IIRC I'm on the 5 computer plan.

The only thing I've yet to do is get my NAS backed up via crash plan. Soon, very soon.

My biggest issue with all of these is that I want my music files backed up, but I have over 8 TB's of music data...

I'm trying to find a good archival system for my audio stuff and SWMBO's photo/video stuff.

Anybody know of a fast, inexpensive, fool-proof, ultra dense, permanent archival media that I can order from Amazon with FREE shipping?

Sorry, but they don't sell Atlantean crystals.

Here's the system I intend to use with my new build (whenever I can afford to do it):

Raid two large hard drives for day-to-day use.
Backup to a separate hard drive (preferably an external that can be put into a fire-proof safe).
Upload to a Cloud provider.

That gives you immediate hard drive failure prevention, a fall back if something happens to your main system (like theft) and catastrophic backups in case of some bigger issue (like a fire or zombie apocalypse  ).

Three 4 TB hard drives can be purchased for about $340 total, an external "toaster" for another $20-$30 and $59 per year for the Cloud storage (with Amazon).  So about $420 as an overall total.  Not bad I would think!

I have backups covered.  I'm looking for an archive solution.

I've purchased 3T drives for my USB3 dock for $90 each.  These do a surprising number of diff backups.
