Hi all, I'm in the market for a new DAW and I'm looking seriously at Sonar. I'm coming from Ableton and the pricing structure has just gotten out of hand for a hobbyist like me. I don't believe in pirating so the lower price of even the platinum version of Sonar coupled with the rent to own option is very attractive. Anyway, I'm hoping someone can answer the following:

$324 for Platinum here:

That's a Really Good Deal. Hope the OP finds the right thing at the right price, and yes, the community here adds a ton of value, and not just answering questions either. The entertainment value is worth the price of admission alone! Not to mention profound-if-somewhat-tangential philosophical meanderings... ;)

That is a really good price. Especially considering all of the extras you get that others would charge for.

As I understand it Sonar ownership takes 12 monthly payments( if you opt for that plan) to reach the point where you can  keep what you have indefinitely....so long as your system will operate without things becoming obsolete you'll be ok. IOW if you only payed for 6 months you loose. You need to pay for a year.

After that you have a choice to continue with monthly updates or not. As an example- If you decide not to update Sonar and come back a year later with the money to update it, you'll get everything you missed in the preceding months you didn't pay.

It this correct?

Yes, the monthly payment plan grants the same license as the single payment plan after 12 consecutive monthly payments.

Unlike the single payment plan, the monthly payment plan automatically renews and continues until the user cancels it. Should it be cancelled, it may be started up at any time. When restarted, any updates or additional content is included unless the content was exclusive to the month it was added. Cakewalk has not added exclusive content in some time.

One other thing about the monthly payment plan; once renewed, in order to keep the updates 12 consecutive payments must be completed, just like the original purchase. IOW, SONAR is not sold by the month.
