  • Battery mono outs not showing in X2

I'm trying to set up a Battery kit with multiple outputs in X2. First time I've done this in Sonar and I've run up against a problem.
By default, Battery has 16 stereo outputs set up, and these all show as inputs in Sonar.
However, if I add mono outputs to Battery in the options, they don't register in Sonar. I've tried restarting Sonar to see if that's what it would take to register them - no cigar.

Does anyone know what I have to do to get extra user defined Battery outputs to show up in Sonar? One thing that I have considered is that it's a bug and Sonar sees the outputs but does not display them in the list. On my screen, the list of Battery outputs stretches all the way down to the bottom. Could it be that when the list of outputs exceeds the screen height, Sonar is not activating a scroll bar? I already had this problem with drum maps on my smaller monitor, when it would literally cut off the end of the list where the scroll arrow is.

UPDATE: I have gotten the mono outputs to show. What I did was to reduce the number of stereo outputs in Battery to 4 instead of 16. Now it's showing the mono outputs under the stereo ones in Sonar. It looks like I was right...if there are too many outputs to display vertically then Sonar will just not show them. Seems like a pretty major bug...or am I missing something?

Sharke, your post only highlights to me how much I don't know about Battery, and I've owned and used it for over five years lol.

In the past I've let all of the cells to be output to the master channel. Pure ignorance on my part I'm afraid.

But I'm having a look now and I can see that you can output to either stereo or mono outs. Is there any particular reason why you need to use mono outs, as opposed to just using stereo outs?

Or perhaps all the cells should just be output to mono outs and then panned from its X2 track?

Forgive my ramblings, I should really spend more time learning about my synth...

wow... just been looking at the options again in Battery and you can have up to sixteen stereo outputs AND thirty mono outputs. But X2 only appears to see the first sixteen stereo outputs, like you say. Is that a limitation of X2 or of Battery though?

I must admit, that for what I do, I can live with this to be honest.

To be honest, there is no reason why I needed to use mono outs, I was just basically experimenting to come to a fuller understanding of Battery. And indeed getting the mono outputs to show in Sonar just brought with it new problems. For instance, if you have say Mono outputs 6, 7, 8 and 9 in Battery, what you see in Sonar's input list will be Mono 6: Left (mono), Mono 6 Right (mono) and Mono 6 (stereo) and so on through 7, 8 and 9. Not really sure what's going on there!

Think I'll just stick to the default stereo outputs

I honestly think it's a bug as described above, in that Sonar uses these non-scrolling menu lists without any thought to what might happen if there are more options than screen space. I really don't know why they can't just use a regular pop-up menu that you can scroll through.

As far as I can remember, I didn't have the same problem in Pro Tools, it would show all outputs. But then again, every time you change the outputs in a VSTi in Pro Tools, you have to restart the whole program in order for Pro Tools to register them. I guess every DAW has its annoyances.

Apart from that, getting multi-outs from Battery to Sonar is a breeze, and I would highly recommend it for more flexibility in your drum mix.

S'funny that Sharke, because on my setup I am able to scroll my list of inputs. But even so, once a number of inputs are exceeded they do not show on the scroll list. Weird...

Yeah, I with you on the flexibility thing, and it was only when I experimented with SD3 and BFD Eco that I reallised you could do this with a drum synth. The fact that I could also do that with Battery anyway kind of made me feel a bit dumb.

Hey ho. I know now :-)

Hmm you're right, I'm able to scroll the inputs on Kontakt etc.

This appears to be a limitation within Sonar - there were certainly at one point limitations in the number of outputs through some version of VST, but I saw on the web that at one point that was going to be changed to allow more.

That change may have taken place already in the spec, and that would be suggested by Battery 3 allowing the internal creation of the extra 30 mono outputs.
I don't know that I would label that as a 'bug' in Sonar.  It is more like a rational design choice for purposes of having the drop-down list displayed.  Perhaps if you really wanted to have that many channels displayed as choices in Sonar you could submit it as a feature request?

PS - I didn't know that about Battery 3 either, and I have used NI stuff since Komplete 3.

Doh! :)
