Well, there was just a huge explosion at the Con Edison power station on Avenue C, about 10 blocks from me. The whole sky lit up like before, but it wasn't coming from above, it was something in the plant. It was a freakish electric blue/green color. Then there was an almighty crash, and a whole bunch of white smoke. It was enough to knock my computer off so that I had to restart it, but thankfully I still have power. I wonder what in the hell happened there.

I spent my battery backup money on a microphone.  (hanging head in sorrow and shame)

I just went down the street to take a look at the encroaching floodwaters and there was another explosion at the power station right by us, about 4 blocks away. This time it was serious. Like a bomb going off. Much panic and running in the streets, people screaming. Manhattan is now a blackout situation and it's chaos!

I feel the need to say somethng, however pointless it may be.  My thoughts (and many others, judging by this thread) are with all of you.

Good luck and prayers..

Well, we lost power for few hours or so. Just limbs down around here but nothing major so far.

@Danny, I never thought of that but even so, you still have to clean the broken glass no matter what. It's always handy to have a good shop vac!

I tell ya, New York is a scary place in a blackout. I'm on edge just looking out of my window! Would hate to be back on the street now...NYC has turned to anarchy in a blackout before and there are some monsters out there...

@sharke... The last big blackout in NYC had people exhibiting extreme benevolence. There were some nasty ones well in the past but after 9/11 the towns learned to be cool in crisis. I'd still stay inside and lock your doors though just in case. Those were probably just transformers blowing and those people are freaking out for nothing.

BTW Battery Tunnel is flooded with seawater. That seems to be the big news right now.
