  • Why is X2 selecting clips I am nowhere NEAR selecting? (p.4)

It's a cool trick that was buried in the talented Mr Garrigus' X1 Power. I made sure to write it down in the little notebook that lives beside my DAW. I wonder when X2 Power is coming out.
Glad to be of service!

That function also works on controls in the Track view and in the Inspector.

Working hard on SONAR X2 Power! but still a few months away. Why? Because the book will be based on the final shipping version of X2 and not the beta version. I want it to be as accurate as possible.

Thanks!
Scott

Right on, Scott. I've been keeping that on my "must buy" list... and I'm a broke arsed bleepo so that really means something. The specific meaning is, "this is a crucial purchase to keep my home studio running and keep aggravation to a minimum".

Take your time, man. The more accuracy and detail the better.

As long as you're here though... any thoughts on this weird selection mayhem? User error?

I have 3 of Scott's books, including X1, but I guess I missed that tip. Thanks!

Hey Beepster,

The "hollow wave" issue you're seeing is an intended result of using the isolate function.  That outlined area is a muted range in the clip.  If you have some lanes, select a range on one of them, and choose "isolate" it will mute that range on the others.

This sounds similar to control dragging with the mute tool in lanes, no? You mute all other tracks exceppt the one you are control dragging over.

Never mind. I think I'm out of my depth.

It sounds like this might be what's going on...

Using the Mute tool, you can hold down Ctrl + Shift and select audio in a lane. That will isolate (or unmute) the audio you select, while also muting the same audio section in all other lanes.

That hollowed out waveform look means the audio is muted.

Using this function is the 'official' way to do comping in SONAR.

Thanks, Bill. Now I have a term I can research. However that was certainly not intended. It happened when I a) muted a small rhythm guitar clip which then muted a BFD MIDI clip (the weird selection issue) then b) when I selected and "isolated" the BFD clip to unmute it c) created hollow waves for that time period on two other rhythm guitar clips.

It really seems like when I click on or highlight or select anything it is applying the select to all of the tracks above it in my track list no matter what I do.. but randomly (it doesn't seem to happen all the time). However that is a very truncated assessment of what I am experiencing. It's a lot weirder than that but it's hard to define and describe. I'm shut down for the night but any and all ideas will help isolate what's going on. Doesn't seem to matter what tool I'm using and as I said sometimes it does it... sometimes it doesn't. I'll take a fresh look tomorrow. It's a shame because this tune is sounding pretty cool. I'd like to get it done and posted. Cheers and thanks for the insight.

Okay cool, Scott. I'll re-read the section on that "isolate" "mute" function in X1 Power see if I can figure this out. But this particular thing has only happened once and it's since I tried that "isolate" function so I think the original selection problem is still gonna be haunting me. Cheers.

Hi Beepster..... Here's a link to one of my X1 videos that shows the mute tool in isolation mode. That may help a little, using that it really is both quick and easy to comp together a decent take from many.

If you've ever heard me sing you'll know how important that is to me.
