Hey all,

One for the techys.  I'm using an NVIDIA Geforce 7200 with 2 x 19" Monitors.  TrackView on left and Console on right.  I'm setup in such a way that I could do with a little more screen space in TV clips pain.  After many layouts I'm at the stage now where I simply need more space.  With Dual monitors I can't even see half on the control bar. ;<

So thinking of upgrading vid card to give me higher resolution.  I understand that Screen rez has no bearing on monitors themselves and would have negligible affect on CPU DAW performance (though I'm open to be correct on this)

Can anyone offer some advice on how much extra room I might be able to gain and if I would affect DAW performance?

What resolution is everything running at now? Assuming everything is already running at max res it can support inc monitors, would a 2nd vid card plus extra monitor be an option? Or using screen sets according to what you are doing at the time. 
In any case, I'm thinking that the number of ppl that have read your post vs number of people commenting, the techies might want more info. I'm not a techie so can't help further, just think of this post as a gentle 'bump' ;-)

screen res wont affect the performance of sonar, thats more your monitor, the higher res monitor, the more definition, as for your gpu, if anything you should get better performance than with on board graphics, cuz it frees up more memory and cpu for sonar to use, cuz graphics cards have their own processors and memory (bar onboard)

If you can't even see the whole toolbar with your present settings/equipment my amateurish guess is that there's something odd in you settings. 

For starters, asking whether you should increase the resolution or not, the essential info would be: What resolution are you using now?

I have 2 x Hanns G HX191D 19" monitors which i think are max rez 1280 x 1024


In Sonar I can fit 34 tracks (minimised) in view with control bar visible and no track folders in use.

I really need more at this point (putting screensets aside etc) but I'm not sure the best course to take and if I'd be effecting DAW performance.

There are a couple of things you can do which should help.

First of all, decide exactly which modules you want to see in the Control Bar and hide the rest. I'm pretty sure nobody needs ALL of them.

Second, it appears that you're not using Track Folders. I personally would be totally lost without them (shame you can't have nested folders) but using them tidies up your workspace no end

Usually the highest resolution listed in the graphics card driver dialog is the highest res that the display is reporting that it can handle. 

This doesn't necessarily mean it is the highest res the graphics card can handle.

If you hook it up to another display the the highest resolution listed in the graphics card driver dialog may be something different.

I'm guessing it will easily do a pair of 1920x1080 displays, but the Nvidia site doesn't have the spec readily available.

Thanks Bristol.  Though its not about screen layouts.  I do config the control bar and do use folders.  This query is more about actual screen rez.

I need more screen real estate when it comes to tracks in view (verticle) and clips pane (horizontal).   

I acknowledge all the tricks of hiding the control bar and screensets etc.

Im pretty sure that cards supports higher resolution than that. If your displays don't run at 1900 x 1080 then I think that's where your problem is.
