I have been tracking bass this morning.  
I notice that when the "Record" is on and just playing back what I recorded the level meter (in track view) does not show the actual sound level.  e.g. I recorded the track at -6 but the level meter only displays around -36.  If I disarm the track, the meter shows the correct sound level.  
 
Did I miss something and its always been that way, or do I or Sonar have a problem?  I'm using the latest 23.10.0 Build 14 (2017.10) X64.

That's the same way it's always worked for me. Also if I'm working in melodyne, I have to turn the record off, or I don't hear any sound if I'm adjusting the pitch of a note.

Must be I just never noticed it before and I've done a lot of instrument tracking.  I rolled back to 2017.09 just to see and it worked the same way there (I'm back to 2017.10).
 
 
 
 

In my case the audiometer shows the input signal - instead of the playing audio.
If I disable input-monitoring it shows the full audiosignal. 

Just to clarify, I'm talking about the Vertical level meter.
 
 

I think what Thomas said is how it works. 
With input echo off it read correctly for me.
