If i take a pre made drum loop and try to edit in the PRV, the notes do not show up if i change the drum map. but they play just fine. i want to use the drum map that says the drum names instead of the note value, and its the same with the step sequencer, how can i edit drum patterns in prv with the drum map of my choice?

Right-click on the piano keyboard in the PRV. In the "Note Names" dialog, click the "Use these note names instead" radio button, then make a selection from the dropdown and click OK.

If you specifically want to use the drum map editing pane instead of the PRV you have to set the midi track output to the relevant drum map. For instance if you are using superior drummer as your drum sequencer then selected superior drummer from the looooooooong list of drum maps included in Sonar will give you what you want. 

Tip when the list of drum maps shows up type the initial letter of the name to scoot down the list. 

When in the PRV you will have to have "show drum map pane" selected and also drag it I to view from the top of the PRV.
