This is definitely one of those "agree to disagree" moments...   While I do admit that layers are easier to grasp, actually working with them was never much fun for me.  Hence my "fiddly" comment early on... which was worse when dealing with clip envelopes, in layers, which was something I had done a fair bit.    Lanes make this so much easier IMHO.

However... I will also admit that I haven't done much heavy duty comp work in X2 either.   Though what I have done just "felt" better using lanes right from the get-go.    So here's to fixing the bugs and accessibility issues with lanes so that layers aren't missed quite so much.

Hi Steve...

I'm all for a solution that suits all! Fix the bugs in Lanes and allow an extra option to display lanes within a track's space (maybe a more sophisticated image akin to the folders?) and I'd be a happy camper!

For those that didn't use layers much, well of course it won't be missed.

But I used layers a LOT and I was fast at working with them.  There were issues that needed fixing, and perhaps these were enough to put some people off, but the workflow of layers is not replicated with lanes for audio work.  Not for me, and not by a long stretch.

I like lanes for automation, it was something I asked for, but I'm glad they kept the X1 way of working with envelopes for those that preferred the "old" way.  Layers should be there for those that prefer that way of working.

I'm with you here, but I preferred the original envelopes method in 8.5.3... In need of fixes and a few more features, but the fastest over all for me... I learned to live with X1 at a slightly reduced speed along with a bit more confusion (no discernable labels for the envelopes when not specifically selecting it)....  So at least here I can simply work the X1 way and ignore the automation lanes...

But the Track Lanes? Right now their' zoom issues alone have made them useless for me for comping. I've been forced back to record each loop on new track while feeding all to a bus to minimize plugin redundancy.... Messy but better than Lanes!

Perhaps if the NEW lane inserted itself 1st in the list instead of at the bottom of the list.. This is my biggest problem, and actually it existed in layers as well but did not seem so pronounced due to extra space being consumed by lane structure. If you record a lot of takes pretty soon you can no longer see the current lane as well as any tracks that exist above this track. Maybe if I were a better musician this wouldn't be an issue! HA I like to be able to see certain tracks/clips to help with my timing on the next take. Especially useful on a new song idea where you really do not have a solid grasp of the feel of how the instruments are all coming together timing wise.

Now that I'm at the comping/mixing stage the "Notes" section is proving invaluable. I just went through every take of all the rhythm and lead parts deleting the crap and making notes on everything else. Now I know exactly the good and bad points of each, which ones are completely usable and which ones will need to be sliced up to comp with others or pad the final takes I use. All without weird naming conventions or having to listen back just to see what's what. Extremely useful.

Not so good... well these solo, mute and record buttons are a pain. I wish they made it so you could solo multiple takes. Also it sometimes takes a couple clicks to get the buttons to work which is annoying. I'd also like to be able to move the takes around so they are in the order I want.

Beep, I agree totally on the notes section of lanes. I use that a lot, especially with different patches on keyboards. That's a real plus for lanes, is it enough to offset the rest? not sure...

I said it earlier in the thread... they definitely need some work but the concept is a massive step in the right direction IMO. It's made my recording sessions a million times easier but as with most things everyone's needs and tastes are different. I certainly hope they get refined with the patches as opposed to having to wait for the next full version. Not sure I'm gonna be in a position to afford the next upgrade so X2s gotta work. I'm getting a little annoyed with the little audio engine stops and crashes even though they are minor. Cheers.

Did you load the quick fix beep? It might help the crash issue. It did for me.

Hey, dude. After reading what it's supposed to fix I got the impression it was geared towards fixing stuff I don't even use but maybe they added some extra tweaks or something. I guess I should go ahead and do it but I've just been kind of swamped with meatworld mayhem and am in the middle of a project so I'm not sure if it'll bork anything up. It's not THAT bad but little things like the white screen upon opening and  the random stops when quickly stopping and starting playback get tiresome. Hope you've been well. Cheers.

I think it tweaks the PC code for everyone in a good way. It is easy to back out if you don't feel the benefit (makes a copy of your original SONARPDR.exe). Everything OK here. Figured you were occupied with habitat issues. Oh well, my hijack is over.

FWIW, I used layers a lot. The move to lanes does not bother me. I am sure CW will sort out the flakey bits soon.

Cool. I'll check it out when I have time... and yeah, trying to get a new Beepster cave happening. Getting a little anxious. :-/
