  • How do I remove Sonar 8 completely before X2 upgrade?

Being in limbo at the moment I decided to upgrade my computer to 64 bit. I purchased a new roland quad-capture, and while I was waiting for it I installed Sonar 8 and all of my plug in. Everything worked fine until I got the quad-capture installed last night. I had no probs getting the quad-capture to work, but as soon as I went into Sonar 8 there was a pop up window saying that Sonar 8 can't work because it's not installed properly. ???? Again, it did not do that before the quad-capture. I found that strange. I opened and closed a couple of times, every time had the same pop up. When I opened as an administrator it works. Then after doing a couple of things the same pop up appears. So I reinstalled it. Same ol same ol. One of the things I noticed is that I completely removed Sonar 8, then reinstalled it. When I reinstalled it it said there was a previous version there? How? I uninstalled it? I plan on getting X2 so I'm not too concerned about this problem. I would like a clean slate on my puter before hand, however. So the question is, how do I uninstall Sonar 8 COMPLETELY before I install X2. And if you have any idea why the quad-capture would have cause that feel free to explain. It befuddles me. Thanks

You can go into your control panel and then go into the 'install and uninstall" menu.

Then you can go into your registry and delete all traces of it. I would make a copy of your regsitry just in case you screw something up.
You should not have to go into your registry, as the uninstall will be enough

I think I'll just do a system restore guys. Nothing to see here, move along!

But the uninstall does not remove all traces it seems (because it said there was a prior version of it even though I uninstalled it). Is it safe to simply erase entire lines in the registry?

Personally, I left the prior version on my system when i installed X2.  By doing that, it finds all your preferences and settings and moves them to the new install.  Time saver IMO.

As for the registry... I don't touch mine since my computer told me a long time ago that it doesn't like me and it will malfuncntion if I touch anything :-)

the 100% method would be a complete OS install with formatting.
You may never discover every little piece, the software developer does this on purpose.

Most all software hides a little bit away somewhere where you can't find it. This is used as a time clock so it knows your history with the software. It tells when your trial version has run out and will not let you install it a second time. An old trick for outsmarting this was set your computer clock back ( stay off the internet)

As far as I've noticed having the other versions installed should never cause any issues.  A new interface should make no difference and your just as likely to get that message with X2 if the drivers are not correct.

There is no requirement to uninstall any prior versions of Cakewalk, prior to installing X2.

I have 8.5.3 x32, as well as X1 x32 and x64, AND X2 x32 and x64.

There are some files left in the registry when you un-install any version of Cakewalk. You have to use the registry editor to locate any Cakewalk folders left in there and delete them as well. Otherwise, those left behind folders will cause problems when you try to re-install or install a newer version. There used to be another thread in this forum where they went thru the process step by step. I don't trust my memory to advise you how to do it since it has been so long since I had to do it myself. I would try a search of this forum to see if that thread is still here.

I use CCleaner to uninstall programs. Seems to do a pretty thorough job for most things. Gotta be careful with it though. On the off chance you make a mistake you can remove stuff you don't mean to and screw up your system. It's pretty hard to do that though if you pay attention to what you are clicking. You can download CCleaner free from CNET.

Thanks guys. I find it strange that it started doing this just now. I did a clean install of XP and then Windows 7 64 bit on that. I downloaded service pack 1, then installed Sonar 8, then my plug ins. I was able to play around in Sonar without the audio interface with no problems. Yesterday after installing my quad-capture it started giving me this Sonar is not installed properly crap. So earlier I erased everything Cakewalk in my computer, both in program files and program files (x86). I removed the Cakewalk registry info. I then reinstalled Sonar 8 just for giggles. It installed fine, but again, I could not open because it is telling me it was not installed properly. I then did a system restore to a point before I installed the quad drivers. Same thing. Strange. I don't know where I'll go from here. Here's to hoping X2 won't give me the same probs! I wonder if it has something to do with Administrator crap in Windows 7?
