  • How do I remove Sonar 8 completely before X2 upgrade? (p.2)

Erasing program files and registry entries does NOT completely get rid of 8.  There are additional folders in your application roaming and possibly local - names a bit fuzzy, also I believe there are some remnants in the root drive, and possibly in your documents folder.

Look for a Sonar 8 folder in: %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Cakewalk

Also for Sonar 8 in: %APPDATA%\Cakewalk

Might be in: \Users\(your user name)\AppData\Roaming\Cakewalk

Give that a shot if you are manually removing Sonar 8 - of course this would follow doing the Sonar 8 uninstall and removing registry entries as well as program folders.

I think registry keys may include something like:

HKEY_Current_User\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR 8

HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR 8

Uninstall. Find the time/datestamp of the files and search for similar entries on your hard drive. Be careful deleting them. Run cc-cleaner.

Generally though an uninstall will do just fine.

Not sure about Sonar 8 but X1/X2 installations are pretty clean.

I stand by my earlier comments - there WILL be remnants after running the Cakewalk uninstall.  I cannot comment on anything of 8 being left over interfering with X1 or X2, however.  I only was indicating what it takes to get rid of 8.

Had this bookmarked from years ago.  As CJ and Bob Bone have said, you need to uninstall Sonar, then remove remnants from the registry.  This thread should help.

Best is to create an image after each major install:

OS and all windows updates:   image

All Hardware: Audio, video. mouse, keyboard, midi,...   Image

For me: MS OFFICE and all updates         Image

Other bits: dragon nat speaking, misc stuff     image

Non-cw audio software: kantos, korg stuff, virtual midi pipes, vsts,... image

CW products: Sonar, DP, Zta, Rapture,...   IMAGE

This way I am protected during installation

And: can move to complete installation without CW stuff real "quick."

I use win backup for OS disks, and Macrium for non OS disks.

===============
Irony: roland stuff does not work with CW stuff.  All the work of the past 4 years on hardware and way too much still does not work.

Definitily a waste of time. A distraction that will haunt CW software until CW is no longer controlled/owned by roland.

There is no requirement to uninstall any prior versions of Cakewalk, prior to installing X2.

I have 8.5.3 x32, as well as X1 x32 and x64, AND X2 x32 and x64.

All works well there Bob? That's my plan with the new DAW coming.

But the uninstall does not remove all traces it seems (because it said there was a prior version of it even though I uninstalled it). Is it safe to simply erase entire lines in the registry?

I thinking you don't have the right software and firmware updates installed or something. What are your version #'s

Spanky - I want to hijack your profile pic - I laugh EVERY time I see that stupid dancing cat head.  My cat looks just like that one.

To answer Craig - yes all work well on my machine.  I only actually use X2 these days, but did not uninstall any of the prior releases and have no issues.

Spanky -

1.  Please explain why you want to retain 8.  I just want to understand currently do not - thanks

2.  Please explain why you reloaded XP Pro and then installed Win 7 - why not just install Win 7 cleanly?

3.  Please respond and tell me whether or not you have eliminated remnants of 8 using the steps I posted.  I see nothing to indicate what you have done since that post of mine.

4.  What version of drivers for your quad-capture are you installing?

Thanks,

Bob Bone

Robert, thanks for your help. I did do what you said at the beginning. Then I reinstalled Sonar 8 for shirts and giggles. It still came up with the same error. I find it very strange. So, I tried to go as far back as I could with a system restore to a time when I know it worked. Same ol same ol. 1. Simply because I got impatient. I don't have the funds to purchase X2 at the moment so I simply installed it to try and get things going. 2. Because I have an upgrade version of Windows 7, which requires an install on top of a previous OS. 3. I would have done that and that only, but I feel I did too much tinkering (manually moving dll's of my VST's and all that) and I want to ensure that I have the cleanest of slates again--so I reformatted and reinstalled Windows. :) 4. It came with the current drivers--1.5 JM24, how does one go about doing all that stuff? Also guys, what a good free download manager for when I download X2 tomorrow? :)

Why doesn't this forum software show exactly how I type things? I have paragraphs and spacing when I type, then I post and it's all one big cluster. ????
