Is any of that doing extra A/D conversions?

Just curious,

is that question directed at me, Bob?  if so, I'm not sure.  I'm guessing it stays in the ditigal realm with that internal routing in the MOTU.

It was for anyone who might know or have an idea.  I just wasn't sure, but it seems like it would have converted it to audio and then back to digital- I was just wondering if using the YTD Downloader was any cleaner.

I have used this http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html or SoundForge to rip audio out of video files that SONAR does not support.

Did not know this could be done with SoundForge - Thanks! Just gave it a try and it works great!

Cool, I got it to work. I used my phones output. So whatever audio I get to my phones is recorded at the return. You got to watch out for feedback and levels! lol  Or just turn off the monitoring input selection. lol Thanks a bunch! That was easy enough. Never really messed with returns before...

Crappy old soundblaster cards  have "what you hear" for a record option, I still have a soundblaster in one of my computers so I use that for lifting Utube songs. I don't care about the quality.

Probably true about the D/A then A/D conversion, because I record with Wave lab and I can set the recording to any format, so it must just be an audio signal coming in just as if you used the input jack.

Thanks, Cactus.  That stretched my brain some just getting that far - it's encouraging that at least (or at most) one other soul or vocalist thought so on the conversions.  (yes, I meant to separate 'other soul' and 'vocalist') hee hee

Do you have SPDIF in/out? That's a good option as well and keeps your headphone out free. However depending on the headphone output it may or may not be more or less quality. Someone smarter than I and more familiar with the gear would have to answer that.

And yeah... I forgot about the feedback loop problem. Sorry. Seems you figured that one out on your own though. Cheers.

Oh and I remembered the simple conclusion I came to with the help of other suggestions here... Play vid/streaming audio on my internet laptop. Use laptop output and adapters/cables to feed directly to the multi ins on my Scarlett interface which is of course connected to my DAW. That way I don't have to fiddle faddle with any weird routing or software/resource nonsense AND I can use the input trims on the interface to attenuate levels as needed... without feedback loops or the like either.

Obviously this requires a second computer in the room and some extra cabling gack but I'd imagine most of us have secondary systems around and the adapters/cabling is pretty cheap (1/8" stereo splitter to two 1/4" mono).

Sorry if I'm being obnoxiously obvious... but that's how I roll. Path of least resistance, leaf in a stream... and all that rot. Cheers.

Just make sure you turn the Windows Sounds off or you'll get sounds you don't expect in your recording. For YouTube the Real Player solution I gave you is best. I've downloaded whole concerts in High Definition from Youube using it.
