Mozart is arguably my favorite composer, ever, or at least the one who's music I'm the most naturally inclined to love.

Hmm...I can't find evidence of that, albeit after a relatively short search.  Rather, John was a bit put out by his lack of involvement in the recording, according to this:

Lennon contradicted himself all the time. 

It's one of the reason we like him so much - he was human, like any of us maybe even more messed up than many of us - he made mistakes, he got lost, he came back, he got lost again, and came back. But in the public eye.

So anything he said has to be taken with a grain of salt an quoted into context.

After all, he sang "The only thing you've done was Yesterday"... So if one thing has been immortalized it's this one. He didn't just say it on tape in front of a journalist - he wrote it and recorded it and mixed it and released it.

(And yes I know what the original next line after that particular one was supposed to be Ben. ;))

And he meant it, I know Lennon when he is being sarcastic even in books you can hear it.

I remember JL saying the same thing about "Do It In the Road"  Called it one of the most bloody honest songs Paul ever wrote.  John did change his mind a lot.  His answers seem to change based on the mood of the day.

Least favorite, would have to be a toss up between #9 (there you go Ben) of Savory Truffle.

Savory Truffle is great, I think it's about a tooth George broke, the Why Don't We Do It In The Road was repeated a few times by Lennon, I just used that book as an example, so that's why I can be pretty sure it the truth and as I say you know when he is being sarcatic even in books.

Ben, I will be honest here - that above is exactly why you come across as you do, even if it's not your intention.


First: You always make a distinction between yourself and the rest of the world: "we as academics". Sorry to rain on your parade bro, but education is common in most developed countries. Some people here are probably way more educated than you are. Like, way way way more.

Just drop it, man.

Second: Some of us figured out by themselves that Wiki isn't the be-all-end-all source of knowledge. We didn't even need to be told. And we don't need someone who was told not to use wiki to generously dispense that wisdom to us.

That's the attitude that you have to enlighten us again, which implies that you know more.

Thirdly: You seem to assume that the Beatles are this mysterious thing that you have to explain to the rest of us. That they have secrets that only you and a few silent others know about. 

But any of the books that you've read has been read at some point by someone else. None of that stuff is top-secret or confidential. And some people probably read just as much as you did. I know I did read my share of them.

Fourthly: You assume an awful lot in terms of "knowing" what Lennon meant. Your assumption is that you understand it better than most. 

If you've seen the little movie Imagine John Lennon (I'm sure you have), there's a guy lurking in their backyard assuming that there's some sort of connexion between Lennon and him and that he got Lennon's message, and that it all makes sense. Another of those guys who thought he "knew" Lennon too well ended up shooting him. 

Any claims at authority on the subject are totally subjective and entirely yours, unless you have a paper from Lennon himself stating that you are authorized to speak in his name.


Sorry man, but you don't own the Beatles or Lennon. There are people out there who know just as much as you do on the subject, more than a few, and who've been as into them as you are since the 60s. It's inevitable - we're not talking about a local band form your hometown here - as you said it yourself, Time Magazine ranks Lennon 8th on their Man the 20th century list. I guess a few people must know about him.

Ok I am going to across as some know it all wanka, at a masters level, that is beyond an undergraduate degree, we are classified as academics.  That is why we get to have intials after our name to denote we have reached a certain level.
 
Does that mean I am better than you??  To quote Lennon: "I'm not better or greater, I just said what I said and now there is all this".
 
Lets get this straight as well and this will make me unpopular, we are still divided by class, they're the lower socio econmic groups who tend and I say tend to be undeucated, then they're the middle classes "I'm alright Jack keep your hands off my stack" The upper rich classes and most will never see their ivory palaces and then they're the academic classes.
 
And lets get this straight they are as equally protective of their status as the upper classes and we should not denigrate the academic classes, most have strangely wired brains, thats what make us good at analysis, working things out and putting the picture togther.

But I am going to protect my posistion on the ladder of socity, my family come from the lower socio economic group and are uneducated, some could even be called retared.  I am the only one to climb out of that sludge.
 
So one again I will protect the posistion I have climbed on socities ladder for all it's worth and even if it makes me unpopular, lets get this straight, I know my degree's are cornflake packet degree's but they open doors and I can get my toe in where possibly a person without MMusTech at the end of their name will have it slamed.  I know this because all I have been doing for the last three weeks is opening doors with MMusTech.

As for the Lennon thing I know the scene well, once again as an academic, it is my job to analyse, so I have drawn a conclusion that I understand when he is being sarcastic and when he is not.  Am I right who know's I won't until I ask him when I reach that great gig in the sky and we have that jam.

That is why I said it was a conflake packet degree, it does have some respect here in OZ because of the repect for the universitie.
 
I was being self deprecating few around here get that but as I say, it opens door and we are divided by class and being an academic is a class of it's own.
