I hope somebody can help me with my confusion.  After some thought last night, I finally decided to remove Dimension Pro 1.2 and install Dimension Pro 1.5.
 
So I did that today; no problems.  Now I was down to the final disc (4 of 4) for X1 PE, "Additional Content".  I installed it without any hesitation.  As I watched the "copying and unpacking" messages fly by, I recognized the naming conventions for some files from the old Digital Sound Factory "Proteus Pack" 6-CD set. 
 
These files flew by very fast.  But I remember how long it took me to initially copy those files, and I believe that the X1 Additional Content installer went way too fast.  I think that I may no longer have the FULL COMPLEMENT of the Proteus pack set.
 
I'm not sure now what I should do.  How can I check to see if the Proteus Pack is present in its entirety?  I've tried running DimPro 1.5 in standalone to see if I could tell, but I'm not sure where to begin.
 
Should I just reinstall the content of those old CDs?  Or will that break something with the new X1 "Additional Content"?

Quite likely, the programs for the new 1.5 did not install in the same folder as your old 1.2 (You bought & installed proteus packs on top of 1.2, I assume. That's what I did.)

Also, I think the demo proteus stuff has its own subfolder, not shared with the bought & paid for version.

So now you might see only the programs from your X1-flavored DimPro install & none of your Proteus packs, but not because they were overwritten, but because they are orphaned in the old DimPro 1.2 program folder. You could try to uninstall and reinstall the proteus packs. What I did instead was find the old DimPro program location, find the proteus pack folders there, and copy them into the new DimPro program location. Then hit F5 in DimPro so it rebuilt the program list.

I'm not talking about the multisample location. I kept the same multisamples folder in both installs. I'm talking about the programs, the names you see in the DimPro program browser.

I think I understand it now and I have something of an idea what to look for.  I will investigate.

Update

After investigation, I see that Dimension Pro 1.5 is looking for its programs (".prog") files in "C:\ProgramData\Cakewalk\Dimension Pro\Programs".  It no longer uses the "X:\Program Files(X86)" path (where "X:" is the drive partition that I chose during installation). 

My original folders have a creation date of January 3rd, 2010, because that's when I built this Windows 7 system.  The Dimension Pro folder in that ProgramData path on my C: partition has a creation date of just yesterday (it's after midnight here), so I know that it's new and did not used to be there until I installed DimPro 1.5. 

I suppose I can copy the EMU Proteus ".prog" program folders/files from their current location (on my G: partition where I wanted them) to that C partition location.

But I wonder then what else might be missing.  Multisamples?  Element definitions?

I see that my system's control panel "Remove Programs" does not list the EMU Proteus installations, which is odd.  I am thinking of choosing one to (re)install just to see where its pieces/parts go to and whether or not it magically reappears in "Remove Programs".

This could all be simplified if all installers would just put APPLICATION DATA on the partition where the user specified...and not override it to the C: partition. 

I only want the OS, antivirus, disk management, and system rescue utilities on my C partition.
 
I think I'll take a nap on this and decide what to do in the morning after a cup of coffee.

The location of "\Multisamples should correspond to the location you specified during the DimPro installation.

Versions 1.2 and later of DimPro did change where the user data is stored (due to a new Microsoft standard).

In Win XP:
-- OLD location -- C:\Program Files\Dimension Pro\Programs
-- NEW lcation --   C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Cakewalk\Dimension Pro\Programs

The 1.5 update should have automatically copied all of the old location data to the new location data, including any 3rd party content.   Therefore if you have the full Proteus Pack 6 CD set you need to run the 1.5 update (or re-run it) after you install the Proteus Pack.  The 1.5 installer will copy all that data also.

To solve your problem:
1.  Locate the directory where Dimension Pro expects to see  \Programs, \Sample Pool, \Tunings
2.  Locate the directory where Dimension Pro expects to see \Multisample
3.  Make sure all of your 3rd party data is moved to these locations
4.  Launch Dim Pro and hit F5 in the Instrument browser which will re-built your Program Listings.

Finally, to answer an earlier question the X1 "Additional Content" Proteus content is just a sampling of the full Proteus pack.   I own the full Proteus pack also, so after I installed it, I deleted the "Examples" proteus folders (one program folder and one multisample folder).
 
After installation, the FULL Proteus Pack should show the following directories:

Yes, I feel like you; doing unusual stuff, dragging, changing registry entries, etcetera, is not appealing.  The application should just go where I put it.

But it looks like I may have had to do some behind-the-scenes rejiggering in the past, and probably will have to again.  I just now tried to install Virtuoso 2000, and everything got dumped into C:\Program Files(X86)\Cakewalk\Dimension Pro.  Within that there are folders for Documentation, Mulitsamples, and Programs.

You don't even get a choice.  Thinking back, I probably fixed all this manually before, and probably will have to do so again.

So now it seems that Dimension Pro and the Proteus Packs don't install to anyplace common.  And the Proteus packs don't get registered in "Add/Remove Programs" under Windows 7. 

It's disorganized.  But at least it's not big. 

Virtuoso 2000 is less than 100 MB, and the installer for Planet Earth is right around 100 MB.  That's weirdly small for any sample-based violin or percussion instruments (any robust ones, anyway).  I don't use them often as it is now.  After I get them working, I should probably review these libraries for continued relevance.  Maybe I'm spending far too much time and trouble on them when there are better sounding instruments already present on my hard drive.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure I know how I can get them running quickly.

Martin, thank you.  So you're saying that the 1.5 updater should be run even though I just ran the 1.5 installer off the X1 install disc #3?
 
And can you tell me more about the "new Microsoft standard"?  I know "ProgramData" came along in recent years, but I don't understand the background.

I just did what Martin suggested.

I copied the "Programs" folders for each of the 6 Proteus Pack instruments over to C:\ProgramData\Cakewalk\Dimension Pro.  For only 80 MB, it sure took a long time to copy... almost 3 minutes.  But it was over 3,000 files.

Next, I opened the standalone player and hit F5 in the browser.  That also took a very long time, and Windows even came back saying that the program is not responding, do you want to kill it?  I responded wait for program to respond, and it finished.

So now the Proteus Packs all show up in the Dimension Pro 1.5 browser.  I tested a few of them and they seem to work correctly.
