  • A Couple of questions RE X2 Smart Tool and PRV

I'm trying to do a project in X2.  I'm also trying some new ways of doing things.

Yup...I'm stumped.

First of all my Smart Tool defaults to the little "draw" pencil.  I want it to default to the select tool.  In X1 it did and I could still insert notes and stuff at will.  How do I get the Smart Tool to default to select.

Second.  I have a repeating pattern  in my bass line that I'm doubling in the chorus with acoustic piano.  No prob.  Just copy the bass track to the piano track.  Only I want octaves in the piano track.  I can't figure out how to just lasso the piano pattern in the PRV and copy it an octave up.  Or am I crazy cause this cant be done?? Normally I'd just copy the midi to a different track, raise it an octave and merge it back with old track.  But I started thinking...you know I bet you can do that all in the PRV and not have to jump through those hoops.  Can you??

Thanks.

I'm sure I'll be back later with questions.  My X2 Smart Tool seems to be acting awful squirrely.

How about learning how the smart tool works in X2, rather than expecting to change it to the way you want?

Sorry to be smart-assed, but:

Use right-click drag to select notes.
You can then drag them +12.

I think it's easier... but then, I never used X1.

Take a look at this video (whether you've used X1 before or not):

You can't as such but it will react like the select tool in some areas. For example single clicking in the note area will set the now time and clicking on the centre of a note will change it to the select tool.

You can use the PRV track pane to deselect a track from editing. Make sure the track pane is showing PRV menu-->View--->Track pane. Then just to the left of each track name are two square widgets. One will hide the track data, the other will enable & disable track editing.

Disable all the tracks except the one you want to copy from, then renable the one you want to copy too, make that the active track by clicking on it's name in the track pane and then paste as usual.

To move the notes up an octave you can either use the event inspector (Control bar) and enter "+12" into the "Pitch" box or click and shift drag them up. Shift will constrain the movement so they don't wander off time wise.

I look forward to your return.

Yup I've watched that video and it's a dandy.

Thanks, Karl ol pal.  But as I said, my ST is acting mighty squirrely so it's not always doing what it's supposed to.  And I'm familiar with your copy suggestion.  But let me get this straight...if I lasso say six notes in the PRV there's no way to simply copy those and then paste them into a different position of the PRV with just a click or so??  You know like pasting quick and dirty horn harmonies or such.  I'd really never tried that but I'm surprised it's not doable.

right-click drag select, ctrl-c, click where you want to put them and ctrl-v - but I know you know that - so what am I missing in your question?

Ctrl click and drag is the quickest way but I thought you wanted to change the target track which isn't quite as easy.

You'll need to cut and paste then and that's always going to be more than a one click option

I think that's exactly what I'm after Karl.  I want to lasso a selection and then drag A COPY of it to a new location in the PRV leaving the original lassoed selection right where it is.  Will Ctrl Click drag to that?

With your clue Karl, ol pal I finnaly figured it out.

Since the Smart Tool defaults to the pencil I have to RIGHT CLICK to lasso the selection then place the pencil over one of the notes in the selection to get the move tool then (like you said, almost) Ctrl, Click Drag to copy and paste what I want.  Whew.  I am such a dunce. Thanks everso!!!

No worries. I sorta assumed you knew the right click and drag was lasso but wanted it on the left click.

Anyway at least you're sorted......

I'd been left click dragging to lasso using the select tool.  That's what was getting me in trouble.  Thanks again!

Also... never assume I know any blamed thing.  I'm like the guy trying to write Moby Dick using only two fingers on a smart phone.
