  • No Midi sound out - Layla 3g

I got X1 producer a while back.
I have been playing mostly with audio for the last few years. Now it's time to get started on some of my old midi songs.

However, I can't hear the sound through my Layla - -  I've tried everything I can think of but still no audio out. I just can't seem to remember the drill on how to set it up to hear it. I've left all the audio cables in place from times when they did work....

In Console and track view, I can see audio coming IN to Sonar. and I have my midi keyboard and JV1010 1/4" jacks plugged into the Layla, but I must be missing something.

Any hints you can suggest for me to try troubleshooting this?

I'm not sure why you see audio coming into Sonar if you are using MIDI, unless you are trying to play your MIDI keyboard's sounds from Sonar.

So:
If you are doing a MIDI loopback to your keyboard, make sure you are monitoring the audio track (not the MIDI track) that has the audio coming into it, and be sure it has been configured to go to a master out.

Otherwise you seem to be missing a soft synth from which to hear audio from your MIDI performance.

That's what I'm doing - however, that's also what I'm not sure of how to do. It's been a long time since I've had to work with midi and hear the output.
In the track view or channel view, I see all kinds of dropdowns to select something, but they all point at midi options.

How/where do I monitor the audio?

If you are indeed trying to hear the audio coming from your keyboard, then you plug your KB audio outs into the Layla audio in - create an audio track that has the Layla as an input, make sure it is sent to a good audio out, and make sure Input Echo is on.

in that case you would still be recording audio into sonar not midi. the only thing midi would be doing is syncing playback with your keyboard IF you have midi cables hooked up and have the keyboard and sonar settings right.

Thanks Brian - - I pretty much got it from your post.
Sometimes it's so long since you did the basics, you totally forget stuff like this.

I wrote down notes this time.
