  • No vstplugins folder to be found anywhere; can't get Sonar to find EastWest VSTs

Sincere apologies if this has been answered before, but I can't find a reply that exactly fits my problem. I've been using Cakewalk for many years, but this is the first time I've tried to use X2 with a 64-bit OS (Windows 7) and a set of EastWest libraries - Complete Composers Collection, supplied in its own HDD, which is fitted as an internal drive in the computer. I may have goofed up the installation, but I can't get SONAR to find my libraries. I've asked it to scan the internal drive - and also an external one where there are two further libraries, installed some time ago, when I was still on XP. These, also, don't get picked up by SONAR; they did on XP.) A Windows search for the term "vstplugins" comes up with nothing, but I have found the folder manually in Program Files (but not, I notice, in Program Files (x86)). CCC works reasonably well standalone, so the libraries are all present and correct - it's just that I can't get them to be picked up by SONAR. Is it simply a matter of transferring files from somewhere (if so, from where?) to the Program Files/vstplugins folder - and/or moving the whole list to Program Files (x86)?

You need to do a VST scan in Sonar. Go to Preferences-File-VST Settings. In the VST Scan Folders section you need to add the folders where the library is installed. You may be able to just put the drive letter since they are on their own drive. You'll have to add the drive and folder for the ones on your other drive. Then click the Scan VST Folders button.

I'm afraid I've already tried this - the VST Scan folder window shows C:\Program Files\cakewalk\vstplugins D:\play libraries [this is the one with 6 libraries in it] I:\Gypsy library [this is one of the two libraries on the ext. HDD] But they still don't show up on the list of available VSTs, even after I've run a scan. (I set out the above paths with carriage returns on this message, but it looks like they get stripped out when the message is sent.)

Look for an entry labeled "play_VST_x64" in the Cakewalk Plugin Manager under the category "VST Instruments (VSTi)" . This is the player that allows you to access all libraries you have purchased a license for. You won't find individual VSTs for your libraries. I believe this is what is happening to you according to my understanding of your issue. Hope this solves your issue. Good luck!

Leave your libraries where they are!!!!! Don't copy them onto your system hard drive!

Yes, what Alegria said.... you only see ONE Play_VST_x64 (assuming you installed PLAY x64 correctly).  When this is chosen the Play interface will open with the last library you used but will change according to where you go in the Play Browser. If you've included the hard drive with your libraries on it in the list of drives to scan for VST's you're wasting your time.  Installed correctly, the VST for play should be in the ...program files/cakewalk/vst... directory with your other 64bit vst's.  SONAR doesn't need to know where your libraries are... PLAY does.  Make sure you have installed the PLAY x64 and not the PLAY x32.

Best,
Rob

When you inserted the softsynth, did you check all of the folders called VST Instruments, VSTplugins, etc. It could be in one of those. Also, make sure your iLOK security key is installed.

This also confirms that your iLok is rock & roll.

Guys, I'm indebted to you all for your help and guidance. Play_VST_x64 doesn't appear anywhere in the dropdown menus in the Manager. I'm beginning to think I didn't install something correctly - certainly I hadn't purchased the SONAR X2 (or reinstalled an older version of SONAR, which I wouldn't have anyway because of the new OS) when I was installing the CCC hard/software, so it's possible I just skipped a step which asked for plugin details. Is there a way of rerunning the installer so I can correct this? It now looks like a PLAY issue now rather than a Cakewalk one.

You've stated that the standalone version works, so you must of done something right, right?

What I'm curious about is where could that "play_VST_64.dll" (the plugin) be located? Can you search your C drive for that file assuming you've installed PLAY (the player, not the libraries) on this drive and accepted the default installation location for the plugin. I would do this before anything else. Let us know the outcome.

I don't think that will show up in a Windows Search.

I just did a search for 'Dimension Pro x64', for which there are 2 entries with that name within the VSTPlugins folder within Cakewalk program folder.  One entry is for the dll, and the other is for the executable.

Only the executable Dimension Pro x64.exe returns in the search.
