  • Sluggish/Freezing GUI response soloing/muting tracks in X2 STUDIO 64 BIT

Im finding  projects in x2 Studio, which ran flawlessly in x1 studio, are encountering sluggish responsiveness when soloing or muting  tracks, and sometimes freezing the program all together.

When soloing tracks, the interface will freeze, and take several seconds to 'unlock' and refresh. The length of the delay/freeze seems to be commensurate with how many plugins are loaded. The delay/freeze occurs whether or not playback is engaged. This delay/freeze does not occur when soloing busses. By deleting plugins, the delay decreases.
Loading these projects also takes significantly longer than they did in x1.

FWIW im running sonar x2 64 bit, win 7 64 bit, 16 gigs ram, i5-2500k, tascam fw-1082 (Asio). I still have x1 studio 64 bit installed.

Additional info:
Its occuring with 64 bit plugins as well.
If i go through and delete all plugins from a project, theres no freezing, but if I have any plugins loaded, I get a small amount of freeze, and it increases the more that are loaded. However, If all plugins are loaded on a Bus, theres no freezing. So any plugin loaded into an audio track, causes the freezing to occur.

When the freeze occurs, the audio will continue to play while the GUI freezes.
I can move the mouse while the freeze occurs, but cant interact with sonar. The level meters freeze in place and I cant interact in any way with Sonar until it unfreezes (anywhere from a second to more than 7 or so depending on how many plugins are loaded).

Try updating drivers everywhere (sound, graphics etc) and any software that moves including firmware.
Try using Windows 7 legacy firewire driver, Windows 7 non legacy firewire driver, and manufacturers firewire drivers. Any firewire driver that works.

Sounds very much sound driver related to me though...

Everything is updated. Graphics, interface (both drivers and firmware), windows 7 itself.

All these  projects work perfectly in x1 studio.

The sound playback does not freeze, just the GUI itself. I still hear sound, its just I can no longer click on anything in sonar while its frozen.

Update:

I installed sonar x2 Studio 64 bit onto my portable laptop rig and the same thing is happening. A completely different hardware interface is used on my laptop rig (Presonus Firepod). Both desktop and laptop systems running win 7 64 bit.

Same freezing is occuring.

This behaviour only occurs in the 64 bit version of x2 Studio.

Can anyone verify they are able to load old projects in x2 STUDIO 64 Bit without the GUI freezing when audio tracks are muted/soloed and plugins are loaded? The more plugins that are loaded, the longer the freeze.

Ive verified this behaviour on two completely different systems.

Again, x1 Studio 64 bit works fine. As does x2 Studio 32 bit, its x2 Studio 64 bit that is the culprit.

The Transient Shaper plug-in would be my answer. It doesn't play nice on my machine at low latency either. Maybe that one has some look-ahead behavior that introduces the issue you're having?

Unfortunately this is not the case. As you can see later in the video I load other plugins, and they exhibit the same behaviour.

I tried loading the same demo project and adding the same two plug-ins to the same track as in your video demo.  Trying the same thing with a variety of audio interface latency settings, from 2ms up to 100ms, I could not get the freeze as in your video.  I could even do the soloing/muting rapidly in succession (alomst double click speeds) with no issues on the audio or video sides.

Note that I am using SONAR X2 Producer x64, not Studio, though I wouldn't think that should matter in this context.  My system is far from state-of-the-art, with an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, 4 GB of RAM, an ATI Radeon HD 2400 series graphics adapter, and Windows 7 Professional x64.  Audio interface is an E-MU 1820M (that's a PCI interface).

One thing I wonder about is if there may be some tuning parameters that are different, be it in SONAR or Windows.  While I didn't do anything special in tuning X2, I may have done some tuning in past versions of SONAR, and it's possible that may have gotten carried forward by the upgrade.  I don't think I do anything special with respect to Windows 7 tuning (I just checked my tuning settings and I am optimized for programs rather than background services in the processor section and it looks like most of the display enhancements are turned on in that section).

Rick, thanks for tring, however this is something that is occuring in STUDIO. Im pretty convinced that it is specific to STUDIO's code. I'd love to hear from someone who has Studio 64 bit installed.  I've verified it in 3 systems at this point. Audio latency settings have been irrelevant. I've tried both low and high latency settings, as well as different driver type (ASIO vs. WDM).  Im not experiencing this freezing at all in either X1 Studio 32 or 64 bit. It also occurs with every plugin I add, not just those few I added in the video (transient shaper, tube leveler, various sonitus plugins).

The fact that when I mute/solo a Bus and it doesnt cause a freeze speaks to this being a coding issue.
