I run X1d (waiting for a patch for X2 before I head on over), and have never put my PC into sleep mode. It was running a bit nuts, so decided to try rather than shut er down.

All seemed well, but when I ran Sonar after awakening it, my UAD plugs wouldn't load because it said it didn't have the authorization file, Sonar would crash when opening, and Firefox wouldn't even connect to the net.

So it's likely not an X1 thing, just the way Win 7 'wakes up'. Anyone have any insight to this??

I always use sleep... so before you assume its win7, i would try some more tests.. putting into and out of sleep...as this modeworks perfectly well, but know there are some items to consider like external USB devices..you may need to manage the power to them (selective suspend) so that they either keep power during sleep or can go to sleep (if ou know what i mean..lol)

Face it, you just got to reboot once in awhile.

I've recently started putting my computer in sleep mode at night (just 'cause, I'm not sure why) and most of the time it wakes up fine.  Sometimes it gets locked up to the point where I have to power down.  So my experiece has Windows 7 as being a little erratic in the sleep mode.  Can't tell you much more than that.  I've also had my monitor not wake up and needed to unplug from the wall.

Mine's either fully off or on.

We don't need no stinking sleep mode!

I don't have a lame PC, it's pretty powerful. However, I still need to reboot once in awhile. All computers do, mac PC, everything. If someone tells you otherwise, they either don't use it for work or they run perfect software.

I haven't tested anything really, as I literally have done this once and this was the result. I figured I'd ask for experienced opinions ;)

Thanks peeps!

Sleep is for the weak!!!  When your PC goes to sleep, I'm pretty sure it releases ram and other things. The only thing i have set is a screen saver so my screens do not burn out, but my pc stays on, unless i turn it off.

I keep my PC on for days at a time. sometimes even for a week and i never had any problems starting Sonar or windows explorer. I do make a point of restarting it every so often, as this is good for the PC.

Windows and most very common drivers are fine with sleep or hibernate. But you've discovered some drivers that are not so fine. No sleep for you!

Agreed. I often keep mine on for weeks. However, after heavy work within Sonar, it often needs a rest... hence the sleep experiment... which failed miserably on my system haha.

I was told a long time ago that restarting your computer often isn't great for the system, but this could very well be an old-wives-tale, or untrue based on the newer software/hardware of today.

If I'm leaving my PC alone for a long time and I don't want to shut it down, I just do a "lock" instead. Keeps everything on but password protects it. There's no real reason to shut down a computer UNLESS either:

1) Power usage is an issue
2) You have been told to restart because of an install/update
3) Something has gone seriously wrong.

I know someone who keeps his PC on for months at a time. I guess it saves on the hard drive, because those things fail after a certain number of revolutions and the boot process is quite HD heavy.
