I want to record a small piece of audio (some spoken voice) live from internet direct into Sonar.

I've armed an audio track to record - I'm not sure what to set as the Input of the track.    For those familiar with the MOTU Ultralite, I've set to be Stereo Audio MOTU ASIO Return.  I'm not totally sure of the routing, if this is correct.  I get sound, but it doesn't get much above -30 DB and though it records, its very low levels.

I noted also, I can record whatever is playing back in Sonar, onto its own audio track, using the same input "Stereo Audio MOTU ASIO Return" - but the levels on the the track recording are several decibels lower than the master out --- eg, master out -15 DB, track its recording to is showing -33 DB.   I have no idea why the level should be lower than the master out level - but it suggests I've got something not quite right in my routing ..?

Probably I've not explained it too well (!) but I really would like to find out what I'm doing wrong and what the solution is.

A lot of people told me to use Audacity to do stuff like this. Supposedly free and works well. Haven't downloaded it yet though.

I have one as a back-up. I forgot what it actually is, but the ASIO return sounds right. 
If it is the ASIO return and your signal isnt loud enough, then its the audio your inputing that isnt loud or its your Q mix that isnt set up properly.

Thanks Cj -------------- the things that's baffling me is that the level of the sound from the Master OUT, is higher than the level IN to the track I'm trying to record on.   It should be exactly the same shouldn't it?   I've never understood CueMix, but there are no settings anywhere for "Return" levels (that I can find), so I have no idea what to adjust there.

Beepster ----- I have SoundForge - but its the same issue with levels there too (so probably that means that its not a Sonar setting ..+)

    hmm... Check your Windows mixer to see if the volume is turned down. Also maybe see if there are any audio settings in your browser that can be tweaked (never seen any myself but I haven't digged around that much). Also if you have Adobe or Java or whatever there might be settings in there (again never checked). Good luck.

Yea and no. It depends on your settings on each gain stage.
 
I bet you have your faders or gain or something else in your signal chain that is effecting the signal. Check your Entire Signal Chain and check each Gain Stage in your signal chain. The answer is in there.

live via the net, they'd be some compression (bit wise etc).. don't they have a mic instead ? 

get em to get wavsaur , audacity.. send you the wav version which will prolly be FAR better quality.

Thanks Cj - I pushed the CueMix Monitor Level up to 100%, then lowered the level on the monitors & headphones, and then it worked exactly as it should, so the key was the CueMix Monitor level ...

Yea and no. It depends on your settings on each gain stage.
