  • Why Sonar for me is still the best DAW

I use sonar more than any other DAW. I have a protools 9 licence. I bought studio one and I used reaper for a while. Cakewalk should be quite interested in why I gravitate to sonar for most projects.

Groups and grouping. Lets spell that out so the terminology doesn't trip us up here. I have done a few really large projects that have really quite a lot of tracks. In this respect any decent DAW can handle 60 plus tracks without major expansion or stress. But when it comes to making a new audio channel that just carries say, just the kit, sonar makes that a breeze. I can select a bunch of tracks and say "hey you lot, you all go to this stereo bus and that is it". In this way, no matter how many track a project contains I rarely waggle more than 10 faders to do the final mix.
Some others can do this but the mute and solos get mashed up or you have to deal with a matrix or manage aux's. Sonar just says "ok done that".

Amazingly, in all other respects I find all DAWs horribly similar.

So there you are.

Yup! I've used most of the sequencer software out there and I love SONAR's ability to do most any day-to-day task inside the Track View!

Yes it's true. It's stable when configured correctly and boots quicker than most if not all the others.  What it doesn't do we'll I don't need. Staff view pah! Plugins are cash cow and seamless audio engines are for dj's and performers. Which I am not. I could do without pro channel and skylight. I just want solid, clever, intuitive tools to get me done.

Nice riff, loop it. Edit the fluffs, apply the right processes. Group it. Compress the groups. Balance up, mix, fade out, invoice. Nice.

I know the frills are for upgrades and new users. But, at the end of the day I really need a solid workflow that always delivers. I strive to limit my plugins and methods to make my practices as direct as possible.

Keep doing it right bakers. Kiss.

I got nothing but Sonar stuff.... it works well, it's paid for, and well, is there really a need for more than that?

100% agree ! As an EDM Producer I also use Fruity loops 10 and also have Pro Tools 10 but Sonar just does it all without messing about !!!
Since X 1 and now X 2 it has gone from Strength to Strength and certainly its routing is second to none it terms of ease and simplicity.
Mixing in Sonar is a dream and with the Console Emulation and Ozone I don't even need to send my pre - Masters away to a Mastering House !!
A very powerful application and with the correct knowledge it has all the tools and a lot more besides !!
Bravo the Cake Makers !!

One feature of that "R" program I really like and wish SONAR had is route a track to a track.

Now I say this knowing full well SONAR's concept is route a track to a bus.

But..... you cannot freeze a bus in SONAR.

If we could route tracks to tracks and then freeze that would be cool. Not necessary or mandatory but COOL, IMO.

Other than that and the broken solo a drum muti-track audio track when a drum map is deployed, SONAR does everything I need and want.

So you don't use Ozone anymore?

Or did Cakewalk buy Izotope?

I got acquaintance with Sonar 5..(or 6) from a friend's system. I was still using hardware based  sequencer for a while (Roland MC 50.. floopy disk..), using PC only for system exclusive backups.

It's X1 that I really set foot on a real DAW. So my knowledge of other DAWs is limited.

Regarding track to bus, while you can route many tracks into a bus, I know it's not possible to route one track to 2 bus right.. ? The bus selection simply didn't allow this. I was thinking if this is possible, I can experiment with fattening up some effects without having to duplicate tracks.

Is this possible on other DAWs ?
