  • Why Sonar for me is still the best DAW (p.2)

I got acquaintance with Sonar 5..(or 6) from a friend's system. I was still using hardware based  sequencer for a while (Roland MC 50.. floopy disk..), using PC only for system exclusive backups.

It's X1 that I really set foot on a real DAW. So my knowledge of other DAWs is limited.

Regarding track to bus, while you can route many tracks into a bus, I know it's not possible to route one track to 2 bus right.. ? The bus selection simply didn't allow this. I was thinking if this is possible, I can experiment with fattening up some effects without having to duplicate tracks.

Is this possible on other DAWs ?

Could you not use a a send to route a track to two busses?  If you use pre-fader send you could just turn down the track if you only wanted to hear it through the bus.

Edited for typo.

What exactly are you trying to do?

Yes, this works for routing to multiple simultaneous buses...

I was reading from another thread about making a guitar sound bigger, by cloning a track and push one track ahead or back, then pan one left another right. I was thinking if 2 bus may be setup to do this instead of having to duplicate another track.

Well the best and surest way to make a guitar sound bigger is to record it twice - get both takes as tight together through your playing as you can, then pan them to opposite sides.

The clone & nudge method has flaws - it might work, but IME 90% of the time it doesn't.

I still don't see how routing it direct to your 2 bus will help, short of putting a delay on it, but you can do this with any bus, not just your 2 bus.

+1

IMO I think the extra value in the second take is that by nature, it is impossible to get two tracks recorded identically when there is manual interaction on the instrument, so the subtle colorations and timing differences in the two takes adds far more value than a cloned track ever could...

I was thinking like bus1 pan left, bus2 pan right and add some delay as you mentioned. I can also play live and not limited to prerecorded and cloned tracks..

There are probably better ways to achieve this specific task, like the stereo imager plug from Nomad.

But it's more for experimental what other effects can be done.. I do have limited send from my Quad Capture.

So, will an interface with more send outs allow this kind of setup ?

I may have found the correct method to do what I was describing.

http://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation/default.aspx?Doc=SONAR%20X2&Lang=EN&Req=Playback.22.html

Instead of having one track to be assigned to two or more buses, I should simply enable 2 or more tracks to get input from the same source.

Thanks for all the ideas, sorry I may have caused some confusion here.

I have been a cakewalk user since pro audio 9 and I have watched it develop into Sonar X2. Just simply amazing just how far they have come. During this time I have used Pro tools, cubase, Audacity, Reaper, N-track, Sound Forge, and Ableton.

I always keep coming back to cakewalk. I have been using Sonar exclusively since Sonar 8. It is just my personal opinion and preference but the work flow feels better and it is the most comfortable to me. This DAW seems a better fit for me than anything else I have tried or used.

With any DAW you will have issues and a learning curve to work through. For me personally Sonar has been the best one that fits my needs.

I, too, have tried them (just about) all...and Sonar's workflow and interface to me
are vastly superior to any other DAW out there..

I used Cube Bass for many years and never really felt @home...It did the job
but the workflow and interface were annoying to me..

I switched to Pro Junk...and found it the same...and their customer support was
INSIDIOUS!!!  Everything (when I was using it) was too expensive and too -
well...blah ...for me..

When X1 was released I took the plunge...and I'm hooked....I feel right @home,
the interface is the bomb, the workflow is AWESOME...and it just "FEELS RIGHT" to me..

If they'd get off the stick and get up on the Technology out there (their latest ad on
Facebook "claims" the have ALL the latest tech, which is not true)
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151178852742420&set=a.377535322419.162230.18583532419&type=1&theater

IF and when they ever get VST 3.x support, Varispeed, Gapless Audio, VST Expression, and a host
of other NEW technologies that they DON'T have, then they can make the "ALL" claim...

Never-the-less....it is STILL the BEST DAW out there for me...there is nothing that I have tried
that is better as far as work flow goes....

If Digital Performer gets a Demo out of DP 8 for Windows I'll try that...but they're going to have
to really be GREAT to convince me to jump ship...

I just re-demo'd Cubase 6.5, and I have to say there have been marked improvements, but the
interface and workflow keep me away...

I just demo'd a $90 ($36 on Amazon) program called N-Track, and it was interesting.  AND it supported VST 3, while a $500 Top of the Line program doesn't.  THAT, to me, is ludicrous.

I usually download a demo of most new programs and check them out...that's how I got hooked
on X1....and, so far, nothing has come close...for me.

Despite my vocalness about Sonar's shortcomings in certain areas...it's STILL THE BOMB-DIGGITY to me...
