Especially when I do something to a mix I can't reverse like accidentally holding the CTRL key without a quick group selected and moving a fader. All the faders end up moving and there is no way to undo that level of damage. I just close the project and load my last auto saved version and I'm good to go.

I never thought of that solution...good advice Eric

I actually also manually save successive versions of a song via a standard naming convention that includes the date the project was created, plus a alpha revision code. something like

newproject 101512

newproject 101512a

newproject 101512b

newproject 101512c

so not only do I get an auto save of the current version I'm working on, I also have access to earlier versions of the work in progress. sometimes I may make substantial changes, and forget what I did exactly, or delete tracks I want back, etc. so this versioning of project provides a complete and robust solution.

all this not to mention if a crash is bad enough to corrupt the current project file, I have others that have not been subject to the conditions that caused the current crash.

when projects are complete I archive them as both:

- unity gain stereo stems (preserves all effects, pans, automation, etc)

- OMF (preserves all original audio files in time relationship)

hope this helps.

sometimes the best defense is a good offense!

Another thing to consider:  I have an Acronis partition so if I have to restore my C and D drives completely--as in the case of a bad virus--I can.  If you take an image with Acronis everytime you do any major software installs plus save your files to an external drive, you should be able to survive almost anything, although I can tell you from experience that restoring can be a little painful (messed up settings, etc.).

You're almost always better learning the quirks of one software really well, than jumping around.

This is some of the best advice I've read on this forum.

As to the OP: Hope you get it all straightened out.

Regards.

I've dumped Sonar too.  Dumped X1 for X2    LOL

I always backup, but I had a recent problem with X2.  I did a new take with a take lane for the vocal.  The new take lane was made the vocal track and the project saved.  The next time I accessed the project (about 4 days later) the vocal track had the audio waveform in it but the vocal track was "empty" as I did a bounce to track from the vocal track to a new track and the new track was blank.  Looking at the project, on the hard drive Audio folder there was no vocal track.   Fortunately I had a back up and was able to recover.  I always backup the project(s) to a different hard drive after every recording session.  I also do Acronis True Image full hard drive backups (I don't use incremental).

If the OP believes that the files in question have been deleted (regardless of the reason/circumstances..., for now), STOP any and all activity on the machine and use an "Undelete" utility right away. The chances of recovering said deleted files are excellent. Using Google with the following keywords --> "undelete utility" should display many free options. Good luck!

And it waits for you to finish? The theme of advice on this thread is backups. Hopefully you have your project saved with different version names.

A simple batch command can be your friend as well.

XCOPY C:\Sonar\Projects\*.* E:\Backup\ /y/ c/ s /d

I have similar in my Start folder so I can run it at the drop of a hat.

You will need to change the folders to match your own, and obviously, be sure that you know what this is doing before you run it.

Love your animated pic.

Good call on the batch command.

There are so MANY ways to have good outcomes from backing up, and MORE BAD outcomes if you don't.
