Just downloaded X2 and it looks promising. Just two quick questions: Why does the program insits on creating a global audio folder when I checked per-project audio folder? In order to use the same sounds of the metronome for each project (I don't like the pings) do I have to use a template? In "preferences" it's only saved for the current project.

1.  For some weird reason, they built it so that by default, even with the per-project audio, when you export audio it goes to this global Audio folder within Cakewalk Content.  I just tell it to go to my project folder's Audio folder anytime it comes up.

2.  You can edit the Normal template's project Metronome settings, then overwrite the existing Normal template.  I will detail steps - just need a couple of minutes to do that.

I will post those steps in just about 2 minutes - hang in there.

To alter the Normal template (one method):

1. Open a new project, using the Normal template - does not matter what you call it.

2.  Once open, go modify the metronome to be however you want it.

3.  Click on File>Save As

4.  Change the TYPE to Template

5.  Change the NAME to Normal

6.  In the SAVE IN up at the top, navigate to the folder where Sonar keeps the Project Templates.  The default for this is within Cakewalk Content>SONAR X2 Producer>Project Templates

7.  Confirm that you want to overwrite.

Now, whenever you create a new project using the normal template, your metronome will play disco duck, or however you set it up.

Another reason for the audio folder is if you use Ctrl+N to start a project, Sonar needs somewhere to store the audio prior to the project being saved. It's saved in the audio folder and then copied to the project folder when it is saved.

QUITE Kewl of you - AAAHH just now noticed your being an author.  Looks like it might be time to X-pand my horizons - I'll take a look at what you wrote.

Thanks Robert and Karl. I understand the purpose of a global audio folder for a pre-saved project but to me it complicates things when it's only copied from there (and not moved) to the per-project folder.

This all depends on how you start a new project.

If you use ctrl + n then as Karl rightly says, this project will hold all of its audio data in the Global Audio folder until you do a save as and specify a different location (making sure "copy audio with project" is checked.

If you start by selecting File > New from the menu, you'll be prompted for a file name & location and all your audio will be stored there, provided you're using Per Project Folders (recommended). If you're not using PPF's then the audio will be stored in the Global Folder.

To my mind, this couldn't be more simple and covers all bases.

Thanks, Bristol - I always start new projects with File>New or from the dialog box when Sonar starts.  I hadn't seen the audio ever go anywhere but the per-project audio folder, as that is how I always have it set.  Now I know why the other behavior is occurring for other folks.
