I have been thinking about remixing some of my tunes, this is the first one I would like to remix. My main problem is when mastering this I found I couldnt push it too hard without it starting to compress a crap ton and getting pumpy. The guitars might have phazing issues and the cymbals are paper thin. Im also curious to use Melodyne to tighten up the backing vocals and maybe take the harmonies some place more interesting. So lets see what you guys have to say about it, im all ears!

Most songs in this genre are pretty much crushed, so I don't think it is too compressed. The mix itself sounds fine to me.

As Steve say above this genre tends to be squished.

I always get a bit confused about this mastering of individual tracks, for me mastering is about bringing a group or collection of songs to a coherent point for that collection.  Equal level so one is not always changing the volume from one song to the next, dare I say that the stylus does not jump out of the groove.

An individual song should stand alone at the end of a mix.  If it needs more tweaking after it has been mixed then for me and this is a personal opinion, the mix needs to be revisited.

Thanks for sharing.

You're right, Wookiee, this song when compared to my others in the same genre has issues. The main is it seems thinner in mass and volume. So maybe just revisiting the mastering booth might fix this one. I may have not been paying attention on the mix down audio and it might be close to, if not clipping.

Another good tune... well played and arranged.  Nice solo too.

Mix-wise it is a little flat for my tastes.  I'm picturing a band like Dream Theatre were all the elements are clear and have depth, even when there are multiple layers involved.    What happens if you, say, export just drums and bass and go through your mastering chain... any difference?  How about when adding the rhythm guitars?   IOW, see if you can pinpoint a specific layer(s) that is causing everything else to squash more than you'd like.   The song is there IMHO, the mix just needs a little TLC for a bigger and wider presentation.
