  • 2017.10 again overwrites USER TEMPLATE ! - basic.cwt

Dear Bakers.

Templates are to serve users with starting with preferred own customized setup, aren't they?

So why are you stubbornly replace basic.cwt with complete useless setup 1 audio/1midi (even with badly guessed I/O).

I would like to press ctrl-N and get my setup. Not useless thing.
Of course after 2 last updates I am very careful and do not trust install anymore and I do backup my template and restore it but it is annoying and what's the matter with you? Template, please recall what was purpose of creation it. It is not internal Sonar file. It is to make user life easier... Workflow better...

Or if you have some of holly war with file named basic.cwt please do option in preferences where we could assign to startup template (CTRL-N) our own with name defined by us and fill basic.cwt even nulls...

I thought Seth answered this question for you last week ?

I can probably help shine a light on this area. We've been updating and replacing presets for years on every release. Compatibility concerns were the driving force. Having different templates between 4+ versions of SONAR and potentially updating them all in a monthly release cycle was silly.

From interviews (and analytics) we found the vast majority of users make their own presets or use the most basic ones. We decided to "K.I.S.S." the problem away. "One set of presets to rule them all."
TL:DR
1) Please backup your favorite presets :)
2) If you modify a template, rename it.
P.S. Cloud sync is a great solution. I use it myself.

Thank you, Seth, for your advice, Yep, your right smart user should always backup his data including everything ( not like me only project).  But wait ... How should goes design? How hard is to rise dialog box with warning, templates will be overwritten? How hard is to backup templates for user in additional folder with name like backup-[data] or so?
Please do not be microsof'ish . Do not adjust user's workflow to let easier (how much?) installation. Please do adjust program to let user easier workflow and confidence program extremely cares about user data.  Please recall what was point of creation templates. Ready-to-go. We have different interfaces, so we need adust, different preferences (I am too poor to start with count-in = 0, it is only for the best), different needs etc. Please do not overwrite also shortcuts...  It is great when developers are passionate with their work but please do not forget who is target. How hard is to ask or warn user, make option etc? Please recall one of main rules in software creation (never permanently delete user data). Never force user to defend against program. Simple question if install delete templates how rollback to previous version can restore it?

Don't take me wrong, I like Sonar, and this is why I would like it it have absolutely the best user-oriented approach and best workflow in the work. We have progress every month what is great but still many, many things to improve to have the world best workflow.

Sorry, Chuck, what kind of answer is it? Backup template before update and restore after overwriting what was overwritten by update ? Are you serious? This means basic.cwt is no longer user template... or only between updates... I would not care about it if have option to bind to ctrl-n any of my templates...

Piotr - If you set your custom template as the default, it will be used by CTRL-N.  You do have to use the menu options to get to this dialog ONCE to get the default changed.

I just assume that any canned examples provided with any product have the potential to be updated, regardless whether it's SONAR or MS Word. There is no requirement to make basic.cwt your default template. Start with it as a convenience if you like, but save your personalized template as, say, Piotr.cwt and make that your default. SONAR will never mess with it.

Im sorry are your templates getting over written or is it the Basic/CWT isn't loading when starting a new project ?
Because your thread title and OP seems to conflict that.
That's why I posted the quote from Seth, thinking you might not have seen it.

piotr  Are you serious

I guess not... I was simply trying to help.

Unknowen
I see the problem with the templets, yes this was addressed last week that "the bakers replace the templets" because the old ones are possible defective.
At the end of the day any templet created using a defective templet will need to be replaced.
So more or less you need to replace any user templets with each update.
The question is.... What if a problem that someone keeps seeing is related to an old temple and not Sonar itself?
From the ground up if a templet is an issue... this needs to be addressed and fixed so moving forward user templets as well as the older templets are solid and bugless. A bugless templet should be a priority update...

I could be missing something so... lol

Peace!
