Templates are to serve users with starting with preferred own customized setup, aren't they?  So why are you stubbornly replace basic.cwt with complete useless setup 1 audio/1midi (even with badly guessed I/O).

One way to avoid having templates overwritten is change the path to project templates in Preferences > File > Folder Locations. The installer writes to the default location and ignores any custom path set in preferences.

Thank you, scook. It's great to know that.

@Chuck, I would not like to hurt you. I appreciate your will to help. Maybe I misunderstood Seth intentions. My English is not too good. Advice to keep backup personal files is of course in general legit but it is rather not kind of advice you would like to hear when program is without asking you about any permission overwrites your data.

Anyway, now it seems thanks to Bob and Steve I have ways to secure myself much easier than just restore from backup after update.

I just went on a hunt for my template after noticing it had been missing since the 2017.09 update.

Discovered that my Cakewalk preferences had been overwritten for the default folder locations.  Why did that happen?

All my custom path settings were wiped out and replaced with 'C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Cakewalk\SONAR Platinum'.

After pointing the 'Templates' path back to my original location, the default template is working again.  Although I had to reset my 'Default' template to the correct one, because I had changed it in my attempts at fiddling around.

John, I tested on my second machine solution described by Steve Cook (scook). Please take a look above in this thread.

It works flawlessly.

So I would strongly recommend you implement it immediately before you forget about it and next update will destroy it again ;) Also Bob's tip is nice.

Anyway, even on hard torture I will say 'program should never overwrite user's data without his permission'.But well, in this case I believe it is acceptable solution. Just pity I didn't know it when I installed Sonar.

I read Cook's solution, and understand.  But in my case it was my Cakewalk preferences that were replaced.

This was all changed for me (except for project files and video files) > http://www.cakewalk.com/D...age=3&help=0x201D9

All my custom path settings were wiped out and replaced with 'C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Cakewalk\SONAR Platinum'.  That is not where my stuff was located, so Sonar was coming up empty.

All good now.  Just had to restore the correct paths in default folder prefs.  My templates were still where they always were.  None of them were overwritten.

this is weird, and you seem to be the only one reporting this issue?

I think so, because I searched the forums before I posted a new topic in the problems forum:
