Another metal head - Good to see ya!

I love using loops! I use them all the time. But only after some serious abuse and manhandling. I would never compose anything using only loops in it's purest form. However, I can make my own and use them, but normally I mess them up too

I have looked at content with more of an open mind in the last few years and as you say, we have multi GB of free content... a lot of the "loops" are one shots.. hits, percussion, swells, stabs and can provide a great odd shaped jugssaw piece to fill a gap or transition, or can provide a launching board for a whole track..based upon the rhythmic content of a 2 bar bass loop, and some oddball drum pattern... there is a lot of trash there, and some good stuff, and a lot can be done with audio fx too.

time moves on.. there is no room for elitism in music.. it whatever works for you...Loops are a significant part of the music scene now, particulary for the younger crowd,  what matters is more people are mucking with music than ever before and thats a good thing..

No loops here.  We record mostly Metal, Thrash, punk etc.  Rarely we will copy a part and paste it somewhere else in the performance, but for the most part the artists we work with would rather play the whole thing.

This is somewhat off topic, but I really think there is a generational component to the "to loop or not to loop" question.

I'm in my 40's and the only time I have ever used loops is to throw them in as a place-holder for drums later.  Other than that, I've used them simply to see what they sound like in experiments - they have never ended up in a finished project.

My Son is 18 and a far more accomplished musician than I am.  He uses loops extensively.  I guess my generation of musicians grew up without hearing loops on the radio.

I'd have to agree with you. I've never used a loop in my life on my own stuff. As a matter of fact, I've barely used the "loop" feature in Sonar to where it makes a section play over and over. LOL! I've used it a few times for clients though, but it's not something I've had to use much. The loop edit window...where you can cut things up etc...I've never used ever.

My thoughts on this ... You're not a musician if you use loops. You're an artist, but not a musician. Now that I've made all you 20 somethings head's explode ...

I have used pre-made loops, but it's on extremely rare occasion. I create my own and use them a lot though, but they are always specific to the song I'm working on. In other words, I've never made an arsenal of them to use in multiple songs. 100% of the loops I make are of rhythm guitar and percussion.

The loop editor in Sonar is tricky to use, you really have to think it through before you even start editing your clip in it. But once you understand it, it works good.

You can sometimes use a high pass or low pass filter to take what you want out of the loop, for instance sometimes I'll like the sound of the snare and hi-hats in a drum loop, but not so crazy about the kick drum. So I'll whack a high pass filter on there.

It seems the R-mix thingy would work well with this eh?

Rarely to Never. I have auditioned a few but never used them in a tune.

wiki:

A musician usually plays a musical instrument, especially (although not necessarily) as a profession.[1] Musicians can be classified by their roles in performing music and writing music. A person who makes music a profession, anyone (professional or not) who's skilled in making music or performing music creatively, or one who composes, conducts, or performs music (especially instrumental music) is a musician.[2]
Musicians can be of any music style not limited to classical, orchestral or choral, and musicians can have skills in many different styles outside of their professional experience. Examples of musicians' skills are the orchestration of music, improvisation, conducting, singing, composing, arranging, and/or being an instrumentalist.[3]

I used my first loop just this year, for a shaker. Didn't want to draw in hundreds of MIDI events. The results weren't very satisfying, so before the year's out I intend to buy an actual shaker. Then I'm done with loops.
