X2 - Track assignment in Matrix View not working as expected

I stumbled on a useful YouTube video from SWA about the X2 matrix view, which got me to fooling around with it. Fun stuff!!

One thing isn't working the way the manual and the video both say it should, and that is that each new row should be automatically assigned to a new track. Instead, they all get assigned to Track 1. This even happens with the Matrix View template, which starts out with 16 tracks already set up. I am able to reassign them, but it would be nice if they did what they are supposed to. I don't see anything in any options or preferences that would seem to fix this, but it's probably something in plain view I haven't noticed. Anybody have any ideas?

Hi there. I authored the SWA video and I may not have been clear on what I meant....A new track will be inserted but only if one of the data type doesn't already exist. Otherwise it defaults to the first track of that type.

If you look at the video at around the 1:35 point you should see what I mean there hopefully. In the video I'm working in a project with both MIDI and Audio tracks already present.

The track will only be created if you don't have one already in the project.

Thanks for the reply. I took another look at that part of your video, and have to say that your description was definitely clear enough, but my brain just wasn't absorbing very well, I guess.

But it is sort of strange that my misunderstanding got reinforced when I went to the reference guide to figure out what was happening, and read this paragraph -

"The Matrix view supports unlimited rows. Rows are created automatically when you drag patterns

into the Matrix view. Each row displays the name of the track it is routed to. Whenever a new row is

created in the Matrix view, a corresponding track is also inserted in the project. New rows are named

Matrix row “n”."

According to that, new rows really are supposed to generate new tracks, wouldn't you say? Another confusing thing to me is that the template Sonar X2 provided for Matrix View has 16 tracks, all audio. My instinct would be that those tracks would correspond somehow to the rows, but they don't, unless you reassign the rows as you work.

Anyway, it's good to know it's not just some gremlin in my setup, and it's really not that big of an issue. It would be nice if there were a choice about how it worked.

Yes that does tend to suggest that. I didn't check the guide much TBH I tend to discover how things work using trial and error and refer to the manual if need be. That definitely reads like it should though.

The Matrix in general needs to be viewed and thought of in a different way to the rest of Sonar. I see where you're coming from but the very way the matrix works doesn't tie it to any rigid set up.

Digging through the online documentation, I found out that a way to generate a new track when you drag a clip into the matrix view is by holding down "Alt". I tested it very briefly, and it seems to work. So, even if it's not quite as automatic as they say, there still is an easy way to do it. Now, how to get myself to remember this little tidbit...
