I'm just saying none Guitar Rig / TH2 because those are standard bundles with X1 / X2.

I was playing around and like the following setup, works for my noisy strat.

FX :
Sonitus compressor
Studio Devil BVC (free) http://www.studiodevil.com/products/british_valve_custom/

[Post]Pro Channel :
PC Eq
PC4K Exp/Gate
PC Breverb 2

Cheers!

Not using them myself as I use Amplitube3, but I see lepou plugins used by a ton of people and heard some impressive productions using them. Both amp sims and lecab for cab simulations.

Even though i have full GR5, i rarely use it. instead, Hardware - Digitech RP500 direct into Presonus 26x26, all other effects added at mix stage.

I do have a Roland DR880 drum machine.. using it mostly for guitar effects now. Still trying to find a good method to record clean, while monitoring with the DR880 effects. Perhaps a split output of some sort will handle this.

Well I may be wrong here but you have a version of Sonar that does not contain the TH2 and your on a budget. Your looking for alternative ways to get a crunch sound for your guitar. Is this right?

If this is the case I can point you in two directions. These packages are free to download and use. The first one is called. SimulAnalog Guitar Suite.

http://www.simulanalog.org/guitarsuite.htm

It contains

- Boss DS-1 (Distortion stompbox) - Boss SD-1 (Super Overdrive stompbox) - Tube Screamer (Overdrive stompbox) - Oberheim PS-1 (Phaser stompbox) - Univox Univibe (Modulations stompbox) - Fender Twin 1969 (Guitar amplifier) - Marshall JCM900 Dual Reverb (Guitar amplifier)

The next link contains more VST effects just for guitar that should fit your purpose. the studio Devil is among them.

http://www.untidymusic.com/vst-plugins/free-vst-guitar-effect-plugin/list-of-free-vst-plugins-for-guitar/

You should find what your looking for in those two links and all the guitar effects are free

Hi Marcus,

I do have the full GR 5 and the TH2 that comes with the X2 pro (shame on me I have not even open TH2 yet..!)

But my strat become too noisy with the GR 5 patches, so I just do a simpler setup as in my (top) post above. I think it has got to do some line noise in my place and I have to turn down the treble to min, combined with the gate effect, so the overdrive sound won't be that noisy (hiss and static sound).

Regarding the DR880 drum machine / guitar effects, I was just playing around the idea of recording clean while monitoring with out board effects, but is not necessary now as I'm ok with the setup above.

Thanks for the link above, I can simply swap in the effects in place of the Studio Devil BVC.

Sometimes these amp sims also model the noise found in guitar amps when set to crunch tones. This is true of any amp sim that I have used. Coming up with something that works without destroying the guitar tone over all can be tricky.

I use a noise gate as well, but for some reason it works best for me when it is at the beginning of the effects chain instead of after it. Sometimes I found that my single coil strat pickup is the problem. Here is a workaround I have used when recording with a real amp. First I would mic the marshal or what ever amp I was using and then I got the tone I wanted.

believe it or not I took a speaker wire and connected one part to the bridge of my strat. Then I took the other end of the wire and taped it to my arm using medical tape. This got rid of the hum in my guitar amp and I got the tone I wanted to record without the noise. The only problem was that now I was the ground. Don't do this during a lightning storm. In fact I would not recommend this at all. It did work and the hum was gone. The fun part was removing the tape after the tracks were recorded. ahhh the good old days before amp sims

It is great to hear that you found a solution and something that works for you.

cheers

Does this keep you from having to face magnetic north while pointing your tongue west?

Thanks for the great tip!

I wonder if this will be as effective, wire the bridge to a metal plate that is screwed / double side taped on the guitar body where your arm rest :)

One time I was getting hum from my acoustic that was plugged in (I know the best way to get a great acoustic sound is to mic it instead of using the electronics in the guitar)

but back in the day when I had no mics and I was using analog recording practices. (tape) I was getting a bad hum sound from the acoustic track I wanted to record. So I did the same thing, but I taped the wire around the quarter inch male connector of the guitar chord and then taped the other end to my arm. Same effect. The hum was gone.
